Sheepish Smile & Dad's Birthday

Today is my dad's birthday so I'd like to wish him a big Happy Birthday! We had a great phone conversation since he lives too far away to visit in person. I sent a card and gift in the mail earlier this week too. Hopefully one day soon we'll live close enough to pop on over and hang out on a regular basis. For now though, we have a great relationship going strong via our pleasant phone conversations.

Then, I was almost home from a long walk this morning, and as I was walking by a restaurant, I noticed some trash in the bushes. I see this everywhere so I didn't think much of it. Heck, I probably passed by 20 pieces of debris on my walk today without thinking twice. Anyway, I decided to pick up the big plastic cup and carry it toward home. There was a bin 2 blocks down where I tossed it in. (Let me add the fact that I was happy I didn't have to keep carrying the filthy thing all the way to my kitchen- although I was planning to.)

As I crossed the street to enter my apartment, a man quietly shouted "Excuse me," as I turned around and he was crossing the street to approach me.

"This might sound weird, but I noticed you picked up that cup back there and threw it in the garbage and I think that is the coolest thing ever. That just made my day." He continued with a sheepish smile and nod of the head.

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing, because why would me picking up a cup in a bush and throwing it away make someone else's day? And then, for him to go out of his way to cross the street and tell me that? I felt something very special build up inside me at that moment.

"I'm so glad," I replied as I was sort of laughing with embarrassment. "I wanted to walk right by it, but I decided I might as well just pick it up. Thank you, I hope you have a nice day." I told him.

"And you as well." He concluded and walked away.

Picking up garbage is something I want to do more often, but not something I would write about! Until the fellow affirmed the fact that a super-tiny act like that can actually make someone's day. Who knew?

Peace :)
