Favorite Day

Wednesday, May 4th 2011

Today marks one year since I started my year's adventure in blogging. I thought about my favorite day of the year, what I enjoyed doing the most and decided to do it again today.

On my way home from work I stopped at the grocery store to buy the items needed to make sack dinners. I hurried home and started making cheese sandwiches with extra-soft bread, then put together 6 meals consisting of- a cheese sandwich, bag of potato chips, box of apple juice and a chocolate-covered granola bar. I added a pretty, flowered napkin along with a note that said the same as before- "Made With Love~For You".

I packed them all up and headed out the door.

I saw a man looking into a garbage can so I crossed the street just as he crossed to the opposite side. I turned around and went back to other side I was just on and tried to catch up with him. I probably looked suspicious to anyone who was watching me, but I didn't want to give up. When I got close enough, I tried to get his attention by saying "Sir" in a volume louder than I'm used to speaking.

He turned around and I asked him if he'd like a cheese sandwich and chips. He replied, "No." Then quietly followed up with "No, thank you."

My confidence instantly decreased, but that's ok. I wasn't going to give up because I knew there were others who would want some food. I just hope I don't offend anyone or make them upset.

The 2nd man I approach accepted and I heard a girl shout across the street, "Are you handing out food?!!" I turned around and thought am I going to get in trouble? Is it ok that I'm doing this even though I don't have a health-inspected kitchen? Might be silly questions, but you never know.

I answered her with a "yes" and started walking toward her as she and her friend came toward me. She asked again, "Can we have some?"

I gave both her a sack and the guy she was with one too. They said, "That is so nice of you to be doing this. Thank you very much." I heard them continue the same words after I walked away and I almost cried. This is what I'm here for, I thought.

I had 3 more to hand out and it took another 30 minutes or so to find those 3 people. I had 2 more decline my offer, which was fine and expected. They don't know who I am and what I might be trying to give them. And 3 who accepted my offer.

In the end, I think 3 of the 6 were pleased to receive a dinner made with love. I passed the same man I gave the first one too about 10 blocks from where we first met. I said, "Hi again." and smiled as I noticed he had the sack on top of his grocery cart.

From there, I walked 18 blocks home with an empty bag and a full heart.

Peace :)

Last Day of SMART and Dinner With D's Grandma

Tuesday, May 3rd 2011

I was expecting next week to be my last day volunteering for SMART, but it ended up that the students will be on a field trip so today was my last day! It worked out well because I didn't find this out until after the hour was up so I got to avoid the goodbyes with the boys I've been reading with since December. I get sad when I say goodbye to people, no matter how long it will be until I see them again, so this was a relief.

Mr J.C. was being quite the jokester today and I asked him if he made up one of the jokes himself. He answered, "I was born in funnyland." Oh boy did that comment make me laugh! I asked if someone told him that and he said no. Then I asked if he wanted to be a comedian one day and after hearing my explanation of what that was, he said "Yes! That would be awesome!"

So the year ended on a good note and I'm very glad for the opportunity to help develop the young readers' skills.

Then tonight, D picked me up from work and we went to his grandma's new home to take her out for dinner. She decided she wanted to take us to the restaurant downstairs instead which was easy to get to and they have good food too! We spent quite a bit of time in her place and she told us all about the new living quarters. I know she'd rather be at her old house, but it seems like she's adjusting alright.

After dinner, we took her back upstairs and watched some Jeopardy (D answered 4 questions right in a row so we were impressed). Then we said goodbye with plans to come back and do the same thing again soon.

Peace :)

4 Gifts in One Day

Monday, May 2nd 2011

Today was the day of buying gifts! We bought 4 gifts for people- one for D's brother and his fiance for their upcoming wedding, one for a long time friend since elementary school's wedding, one for a family friend's wedding and another gift for my dear friend's baby shower coming up this weekend!!

I think I'm going to go broke if I keep this up! Next is Mother's Day, my dad's birthday, my mom's birthday and then Father's Day. What a busy time of year, yet all such exciting times and happy moments ahead.

I'm really excited for all of our friends to receive the gifts we bought for them. I'm pretty sure they'll enjoy them.

Peace :)

Letter to Auntie

Sunday, May 1st 2011

My great aunt, who we've always called "Auntie" has been on my mind today. I haven't seen her in over a year and I am feeling like I wish I had gone to visit her yesterday while I was in town for the engagement party.

Until there's another opportunity, I decided to write a little note and mail to her instead. I told her what's been going on lately and asked how she's doing. I also talked about the weather and what a nice sunny day it is today. Older people like to talk about the weather, don't they?

I hope she finds my letter entertaining and knows she's in my thoughts.

Peace :)

Champagne

Saturday, April 30th 2011

A very dear family friend of ours is getting married this summer, just 2 weeks before my wedding. Mr. J (the soon-to-be-groom) is my brother's best friend and tonight they had an engagement party to celebrate just that...their engagement!

We picked up a bottle of Champagne (I call sparkling wine Champagne even if it wasn't made in the Champagne region of France- both out of habit and because I like how it sounds) and put some cash in a card signed by my whole family to go along with the wine as a gift to Mr. J and Miss C.

The party was fun and there were a couple toasts given in honor of the couple. I saw some old friends I hadn't seen in a while and I think the engaged couple was delighted with the turnout. Congratulations!

Peace :)

Roses for Miss J

Friday, April 29th 2011

There are a couple reasons why I wanted to buy a treat for Miss J. One, to congratulate her on her promotion. And, two, to thank her for being a true inspiration for me throughout the entire year and helping me keep this blog going. She's been a supporter day in and day out and I want to thank her.

I thought about getting her a bottle of wine, a gift card and some other ideas, but in the end, I decided flowers would be most appropriate. I found some pretty orangey-pink roses in a pot that she could keep on her desk or plant at home. The most fun part was setting them on her desk with a card before she arrived so when she got to work, there they'd be!

Thank you Miss J for being an inspiration and a great friend.

Peace :)

Miss J's Promotion

Thursday, April 28th 2011

We have a new company intranet site and as I was navigating around, I noticed Miss J's job title had changed, obviously giving her a promotion I hadn't heard she received! I was instantly very excited for her and sent her an email to congratulate her.

She came walking right over to my desk instead of replying by email and had a huge smile on her face. She didn't know anything about it! She asked me where I found the information, so I showed her where it was on the website.

That made it even more exciting to show her and we both laughed with joy. She was in disbelief at first because she hadn't been told anything, but I assured her it's got to be true and she deserves it!

Peace :)

March of Dimes

Wednesday, April 27th 2011

At the office, they're taking $5 donations and allowing anyone who contributes to wear denim jeans today. This is all to benefit the March of Dimes- "Working together for stronger, healthier babies" - is their motto.

I gave the fundraiser rep $5 and in return, she gave me a sticker to wear showing I had donated and allowing me to wear jeans.

I think it's a great idea since most everyone enjoys dressing casual once in a while and I'd like to suggest we do this more often and for other charities as well!

Peace :)

SMART- Lightening Up Mr. J's Mood

Tuesday, April 26th 2011

We are nearing the end of the school year and there are only 3 SMART readings left, including today's. I regrettably showed up 2 minutes late (no exaggeration) and the first student, Mr J was already waiting at the table.

"Hi Mr. J!" I said, excited to see him.

He replied in an almost silent tone, barely opening his mouth, "Hi."

"Is everything ok, what's the matter?" I asked him.

"I don't want to be here." He answered. "I'm missing my class project and when I get back everyone will be done with theirs and it will be too late for me to finish mine."

I tried to answer positively and make the best of it, because I'm sure his teacher has a plan for him.

We started reading and I could sense his mood lightening up more and more. I encouraged him as he read and complimented his progress.

By the time we finished, he skipped out of the room, turned around at the door and shouted back to me, "Oh yeah, thank you!" with a smile on his face :)

Peace :)

Who Goes First?

Monday, April 25th 2011

Happy birthday Z! Today is my brother Z's birthday so I sent him a message wishing him a great day. He's quite busy with school and work these days and lives about 120 miles away, so hopefully we'll get together soon!

This morning I had just enough time to stop for coffee on my way to work (I've been stopping only once or twice a week lately which is saving lots of $$$!). I didn't want to be late for work, but if the line moves smoothly it won't be an issue.

Naturally, there was a lady walking toward the door right about the same time I was. The questions pop up- Do I go first because I can easily speed up and beat her? Do I risk letting her go first and place a big order for her entire office which will then make me late?

I chose the latter and opened the door, letting her go first. And, no, she didn't order a bunch of drinks and we were both out of there within about 4 minutes!

Peace :)

Easter Flowers

Sunday, April 24th 2011

Today is Easter. Typically I like to give a flower pot to most of the women in my family and this year was no exception. On our way to my Aunt's house for a big family dinner, D and I stopped at the store where a couple weeks ago, I had seen the flowers I wanted to get.

Usually I don't do well when I'm in a hurry to shop because that requires quick decision making, but it was simple. I found a cute little pot of yellow roses for my grandma (yellow is her favorite color), a hot pink something I'm not sure of the name but they were pretty, and a pot of orange flowers for my mom (orange is her favorite color).

We delivered the roses to my grandma on our way into town, the orange flowers to my mom, then presented the hot pink flowers to my Aunt when we arrived for Easter dinner. They all seemed delighted :)

Conversation with Taxi Driver

Saturday, April 23rd 2011

How fast the time goes! My vacation is over and it's time to go home. At least it's only Saturday and the weekend is still here...

I don't usually like to talk to taxi drivers all that much and figure they tend to take the long routes to make more money off of me, but when I asked the man if he'd take me the short route to the airport, he seemed to be quite nice. When I would typically sit in the back seat and keep quiet just watching the scenery, today I struck up a conversation with the driver.

It was a relief to see we were taking a quick route costing only $12 instead of what has been $27 in the past. I gave him $15 for a $3 tip and he helped get my luggage out of the trunk.

Off to fly home now!

Peace :)

Bank Receipt

Friday, April 22nd 2011

After walking for about 5 hours yesterday, I found us walking at least another 8 hours today! It's all fun though and there is so much to see. We toured through about 5 hotels and picked our favorites. At one casino, I stopped to play $10 in the Monopoly slot. I came out even in the end, so that was good. It's so tempting to keep going, but when I think of what I could do with that $10, I stop.

When I was cashing out at the ATM-like machine, I found a receipt from what looked like someone's bank account. I'm not sure if it was private information, but just in case, I tore it up and tossed it in the bin.

Peace :)

White Chocolate Flowers

Thursday, April 21st 2011

Ahhh. How nice it feels to be out of the office and in the sun! I'm with my friend Miss K, who I haven't seen in nearly 5 years! We are having lots of fun catching up, telling old stories and walking, walking, walking. With a few stops in the shops and a cocktail here and there ;)

All day, I kept trying to buy her a treat since she was letting me stay with her family this weekend, but she wouldn't let me. I had a feeling this would happen, but if it was me, I would do the same. We are a lot alike in that way, which is why we became such good friends from the beginning.

I am glad, however, that at the airport this morning on my way here, I found a box of cute little white chocolate flowers in pastel colors made in the city I'm from. White chocolate was always Miss K's favorite so I gave her that when I arrived and am planning to buy her dinner one night if she'll let me. We'll see!

Peace :)

Spa Treatment Tip

Wednesday, April 20th 2011

I'm heading out of town to Las Vegas tomorrow and thought my nails were looking quite shabby so I stopped by the salon down the street. I could get a manicure and pedicure package for a low price so that's what I did. The lady was really nice and did a great job. She also gave me a glass of wine at no cost!

Toward the end of the treatment, she began telling me about her medical issues and the surgery she needed but had to start a 2nd job for health insurance so she could have the surgery. She told me about her prematurely-born baby who she spent all of her money on a few years ago and is still rebuilding her life since...

I don't know if it was all true and the timing seemed too perfect because she was telling me these things only at the end, right before it was time for me to pay and tip.

Well, I like to give her the benefit of the doubt and think the stories are true. I had cash in my wallet for my vacation so I shared some with her. I think she thought so too, because she offered me change. She deserved it for the job she did, regardless of her personal life stories.

Peace :)

SMART- Improvement

Tuesday, April 19th 2011

Back to the elementary school for the SMART reading hour, I noticed I'm beginning to feel more comfortable. Since I began volunteering in December, I was the "new girl in school" as they say. Or so it felt like I was. But now, I have more confidence, walk right in, grab my folders and say hello to the other readers as we wait for the students to arrive.

First was Mr. JC who I saw was playing peek-a-boo from the classroom door with me. He'd peek in and then when I'd waive back, he'd disappear. This lasted about 10 seconds before the teacher urged him to go pick out a book. I don't know if he's there for the reading because he's a good reader, or if he's there for extra one-on-one attention.

Then there was Mr. J who has become a little fiesty with me. Today, he was more attentive and I noticed his reading has improved tremendously! He did a great job until we neared the end of the half hour. Then, he was ready to get out of there and head back to class.

They went back to class and I went back to work.

Peace :)

Back Massage

Monday, April 18th 2011

At the beginning of my adventure in writing this blog, D always told me if it came down to the end of the day and I hadn't done something remarkably generous for another, I could always give him a back massage. Ha ha ha I would say. Who wants to read about that?

So, here we are almost a year later and I needed an idea at 9pm.

"You can give me a massage." D suggested for the 25th time. (That's an accurate guess)

I thought about it for probably 5 minutes as I was trying to come up with other ideas too. "Ok, I think the time has come." I told him.

Peace :)

Easter Candy

Sunday, April 17th 2011

D's lovely mom (my soon-to-be-mother-in-law!) gave us a giant bag of Easter candy last weekend and we've been snacking on it every single day since! I think if we continue to eat it all, we'll have sugar withdrawals the moment we stop.

Since it was such a nice sunny day today, I decided to take a walk downtown and as I was trying to think of something I could have prepared for the homeless folks I would pass by, my eyes spotted the candy. That's perfect! I thought to myself. I'll prepare a few little bags of Easter candy and hand them out.

I put together 3 bags full of jelly beans, chocolates, pastel peanut butter eggs...and I think that was it.

The first man I saw was carrying a massive plastic sack full of pop cans and as we met face to face, I asked him if he'd like some candy. He answered, "I would love some!" This is going well so far, I thought.

The 2nd and 3rd attempt was just as delightful. It was a man and woman standing together who looked like they were enjoying themselves alright but also looked liked they might enjoy some candy too. I walked up to them and asked them if they'd like some candy (I ask because there have been times when I get turned down and I don't want to assume someone will always take whatever they're given). The white-haired man said, "As long as we get a big smile out of you."

I thought I was already smiling, but perhaps I was slightly shy and forgot. Anyway, with that I gave a big smile and handed him the candy. Then as I handed the girl her candy, she said, "Ahh thanks. Happy Easter!"

I said "Happy Easter to you" in response and kept my big smile as I walked toward home. I couldn't help but feel a couple hot tears come through my eyes at that moment, but the sun quickly dried them.

Peace :)

Enchiladas & Margaritas

Saturday, April 16th 2011 Last weekend, I invited my brother to come up today and stay with us. I wasn't sure what we should do that would be entertaining, but when we found out the first NBA playoff game was on tonight, the plans were quickly arranged. I figured the sports bars would all be packed and hard to find seating, so why not serve margaritas and enchiladas at our house and watch the game from the comfort of our living room?! I hurried to the store to buy the ingredients this afternoon and started preparing. I invited my friend Miss J over too and once D got home at 8, we had a proper party in process. The dinner turned out tasty, but I think everyone enjoyed the margaritas the most! Now it's time to clean up... Peace :)

Sushi Rolls

Friday, April 15th 2011 I invited 3 of my girlfriends over tonight for snacks and wine. One has recently started a vegan diet so I was trying to think of what to serve that all of us would like... Cucumber and asparagus sushi rolls! I was so tickled with my idea because I know Miss K likes those, it will be easy to pick up an order from the sushi restaurant on my way home and 4 orders of rolls costs less than $12! So I can feed 4 people dinner, avoid cooking, (even though I like to cook, it's stressful to do Friday after work when you have 1 hour before the guests arrive) save a lot of money and the presentation is fantastic! I think they really liked it and I was impressed too ;) Peace :)

Train Tickets

Thursday, April 14th 2011 Tonight is the first professional soccer home game here in town, at the stadium next door to our house! We are so excited and D was lucky enough to get tickets through work so we get to go to the game! Along with the game tickets came 4 free train tickets, valid all day today only. Since traffic will most likely make it impossible to get home on time, I decided to use one of the tickets and take the train to work. I knew we wouldn't use at least 2 of the other train passes so I took them with me and stuck them in the ticket machine on my way to work. I was standing near it and as a man went to put his credit card in the slot, he noticed 2 tickets in the way. "Are these yours ma'am?" He asked me. "Oh no, those are extras I had, so you can have them." I answered. He looked puzzled but pleased at the same time as he took one and left the other for someone else. I love doing that at the train stop! Peace :)

Tip for a Free Sandwich

Wednesday, April 13th 2011 I have a new favorite sandwich joint that I've been going to for lunch nearly 3 times a week! For $4.25 you can get a perfectly sized sandwich on homebaked bread, stuffed with fresh avocado (the best fruit on the planet), cheeses and other veggies. It's delicious and I do have to say, it's the bread that makes the sandwich so good. That, and the fact that you get a stamp for every sandwich you buy, so the 12th one is free! When I realized my punch card was filled up after the last order on Monday, I was back today to redeem it. "You can get any sized sandwich you want." The girl informed me. I'm not sure if it's ok to buy a mini every time, then use the free card to get a medium but that's what I did. I knew I'd be working until 8:30pm tonight, so why not?! They got a nice tip for it at least. Peace :)

15 cents

Tuesday, April 12th 2011 I was especially hungry this morning- don't know why- but I found myself at the snack machine looking for a breakfast bar early in the day. I don't usually eat breakfast, but today I knew I couldn't make it until noon without eating. As the change dropped in the slot, I remembered it had been a while since I left it for the next patron. So 15 cents, not much, was there for the next lucky snack buyer! Peace :)

Letter

Monday, April 11th 2011 My grandparents gave me some cash to cover the cost of the candy I had shipped to their house a couple weeks ago. They gave me more than it actually cost after I wouldn't tell them the total and that I wanted to pay for it myself. They wouldn't take no for an answer so I left their house with the cash in my pocket Saturday. Sometimes it's just easier that way. It has been a long time since I sent a card or letter to them, so today I sent a little thank you note in the mail thanking them for the money and telling them how nice it was to see them the other day. Now, I'd like to try to remember to send letters to them more often. I remember how special it was that my grandma who recently passed away and I had become pen pals-it means so much. Peace :)

Mashed Potatoes

Saturday, April 9th 2011 My lovely love, D, has been sick for a few days now. He has hardly eaten a thing and spends all free time sleeping. I felt bad that we were leaving town today with his parents and my parents, but he was well enough to go so we did. It was a long day for him and by dinner time, he decided to go to bed while the rest of us went out for dinner. We thought it would be nice to bring back some food for him and I asked the server if they had mashed potatoes available for take out. He had to check with the main dining area (we were in the lounge), but sure enough, they had mashed potatoes indeed. I took the container back home to D in bed, but he wanted to join us in the living room to have a few bites. As there is "Breakfast in Bed" I guess there is no such thing as "Potatoes in Bed" ;) Peace :)

Happy Birthday Grandma

Friday, April 8th 2011 Today is my late grandmother's birthday. I am thinking about her a lot today... I stopped by a different gas station today since the usual one was packed with cars. We're heading out of town early tomorrow morning, so I want the tank to be full before we get on the road. The guy who filled it up was nice and I gave him $1. Gas prices are so high that $1 seems minimal compared to the total bill, but it is also because the prices are so high that every extra dollar counts. Does everyone else tip the gas station attendants? How much is the average amount? Perhaps I need to step it up. Peace :)

Dark Hair

Thursday, April 7th 2011 After going all year with dark hair, I've decided it's time to change back to blonde! I went to have my hair colored tonight, expecting to come out partly or mostly blonde, however it looks almost exactly the same! I was disappointed, but thinking of all the benefits of keeping my hair dark- it's healthier, easier to style, roots don't show... When she handed me the credit card receipt to add a tip and sign, I filled in the standard amount that I always tip. Even though she didn't do what I requested, she still worked hard and spent a lot of time on me. Next time, I'll take a photo to describe what I'd like it to look like and maybe that will work. Peace :)

Happy Hour

Wednesday, April 6th 2011 I haven't seen my friend Miss J since September so we made plans to meet after work today for happy hour. When she arrived, I asked her how things were going and the first thing that came out of her mouth was that she'd just been laid off from her job. I instantly felt sorry and concerned, so she proceeded to tell me the details. We had a fun time otherwise and when the bill came I didn't hesitate to pick it up. It was surprisingly only $12, so it was manageable and she appreciated it. I know what it's like to be in her shoes, so I thought that would be a nice treat as others have done for me in the past. Peace :)

Man With Empty Bags

Tuesday, April 5th 2011 We were walking out of the grocery store tonight and I noticed a man sitting on the bench inside with bags all around him. As I found myself getting $1 out of my wallet and putting it in my coat pocket-readily available- I thought he doesn't need money because he has bags and bags of groceries all around him. Then, as we approached closer to him, D noticed all the bags around him were empty and asked me if I was going to give him the dollar. By that time we'd already passed him, but it's never too late to go back! I was thankful for the encouragement from D and quickly turned back toward the man and offered him the money. He accepted it graciously and we continued on home... Peace :)

$10

Monday, April 4th 2011 This month is full of birthdays! Today is my two good friends', Miss A, Mr. J, my co-worker Miss T, D's cousin Mr. B, and it's also D's late grandmother's birthday too. So Happy Birthday to all! My co-worker Mr. F asked if he could borrow some money for lunch since he couldn't find his wallet. I gave him $10 cash, in great hopes he'd pay me back soon. And, sure enough, a couple hours later he gave me the $10 back because he found his wallet in his car when he went to pick up lunch! Peace :)

Espresso Machine

Saturday, April 3rd 2011 Happy birthday Miss KC! I sent a message bright and early this morning to my dear friend Miss KC to wish her a wonderful day. I hope I didn't wake her up! My other friend Miss B is getting married this summer and they've just completed their registry. I checked out the gift list online and found the perfect gift- an espresso machine! I don't usually spend this much on gifts, but since this is a really special occasion and it is the first gift off the list they'll receive, months in advance of the wedding, I think she will be absolutely thrilled and surprised! So the thought of her reaction when it arrives on their front porch in the next 5 days is worth every penny! Peace :)

Homemade Soup & Cornbread

Saturday, April 2nd 2011 I made a vegetable soup the other night and I have to admit it turned out delicious. I wanted to share it with someone who hasn't tried the recipe before and since I was going over to my parents' house to visit, I took a container of it along with my homemade cornbread! I think they'll enjoy it and I'm glad there's one more extra bowl left for my lunch tomorrow :) Peace :)

Pop Can

Friday, April 1st 2011 Today is April Fool's Day, but I think I lucked out and didn't have any tricks played on me. I didn't try pulling any on others either. Although now that I think of it, that's kind of boring. Maybe I should plan ahead next year... On my morning commute, I stopped for coffee (I should mention I've been cutting back and only buying it a couple times a week instead of everyday which is a huge accomplishment!). There was an empty parking spot right in front. As I pulled in, I noticed a pop can right in the middle of it, ready to be crushed. So, I pulled the steering wheel back around quickly and parked next to the perfect spot. I walked around my car and picked up the can with 2 fingers and placed in the bin. Now I need to find a place to wash my hands... Peace :)

How to Set Alarm

Thursday, March 31st 2011 Near the end of the day, my co-worker Miss NA asked if I would be staying at least 20 more minutes until she was ready to go because she didn't want to be the one to set the alarm (she recently started as a full time employee after working as a dedicated temporary employee for a few months). I said I'd be sure to stay until she was ready, plus I had plenty to keep myself busy until then. When 20 minutes was up, I headed over to see if she was ready as she was putting on her coat, walking away from her desk. I showed her how to set the alarm so she'd know for next time and we walked out to the parking lot together. It was surprising and wonderful to see the sun still out. Such a drastic change from a few weeks ago! Peace :)

Expectations

Wednesday, March 30th 2011 I knew I was going to be transitioning into a new position at work, on a new team and with a new manager- all set to take place 2 months from now. So, you can imagine I was surprised when I found out that it had already happened last week! Since there are so many changes happening within the organization at once, I felt I needed to know what is expected of me under my new manager and I cannot wait until it's too late to find out what those expectations are. Though I don't usually have trouble taking responsibility or following rules, I don't want to disappoint anyone, ever. So, I sent my manager an email to ask if I could meet with her and go over her expectations of me. She agreed it was a great idea and the meeting went very well. Now we are on the same page and I know how to stay out of trouble ;) Peace :)

SMART- Back on Schedule

Tuesday, March 29th 2011 Three weeks have gone by since I was able to read with the students for SMART. Two weeks ago, I showed up but the kids were unable to leave class to come read so I went back to work instead. Last week was Spring Break. So this week, we are back on schedule! Mr. JC said he has been sick for a few weeks, so he was coughing and complaining about his physical state all the while doing a great job reading to me. Mr J showed tremendous improvement in his skills so I was impressed. He continued to boss me around as usual followed with a giant giggle, but didn't push his luck too much- luckily for him. Peace :)

Vote for Miss N

Monday, March 28th 2011 One of my dear co-workers, Miss N, told me about a contest she was entering with the city's power company to win a new furnace. This was no "send in your name and hope it's drawn contest". It's a "make your own, creative 2 minute video and send it in contest"! I asked her how it was coming along the other day and she was finishing up her video this past weekend. So today, I followed up again and she gave me the link to her posting on YouTube. Right when I got home I went to the computer to watch it and it was hilarious! She did such a good job and I immediately clicked the "I like this" button. She has a great chance to win and I hope she sure does. Good luck Miss N! Peace :)

Red Wine

Sunday, March 27th 2011 On our way over to D's parents' house, I suggested we stop to pick up a treat for them. I've taken flowers the last couple times, so this time we picked out a nice bottle of red wine. I hope they'll enjoy the variety we chose. Sometimes it gets tough to think of new, creative hostess gifts but I guess wine is always a safe option...and it never goes bad. Peace :)

Miniature Desserts

Saturday, March 26th 2011 Our friends invited us over for cocktails before our dinner reservation tonight and we were trying to think of something other than the typical bottle of wine to take over as a hostess gift. As D and I were sitting at breakfast right in front of a beautiful array of French desserts, the idea clicked- "Let's take dessert!" So I picked out a miniature fruit tart, white chocolate cake, and a giant chocolate cream puff-like treat. They boxed them up with a cute sticker on top- just lovely! I'm hoping they will be just as excited about these treats as I am to give to them. Peace :)

Another Ride for D

Friday, March 25th 2011

Somehow I got talked into picking D up from another basketball game just like last weekend! Although, it didn't take much to talk me into it, especially since we are trying to save money where we can and $30 for a cab ride seems unnecessary.

The only problem was that D wasn't outside when I got there. So, I drove around the coliseum 2 times becoming more and more impatient. If there was a waiting area, it would have been fine. But traffic was moving and I had to move with it. Luckily D was on the corner the 3rd time around and his buddy who needed a ride back to his car hopped in the back seat unexpectedly.

I got a little lost on the way to his friend's car, but finally made it and we arrived home soon after!

Peace :)

Twigs & Branches

Thursday, March 24th 2011 Back at the house we are staying at this week, there have been tons of branches falling on the driveway during these stormy days we've had. So, in the cold and rainy weather, I went out and picked them up. My hands were freezing and covered in dirt by the time I was done, but the driveway looked much better and I'm sure D's aunt & uncle will appreciate it when they get home. Who wants to drive over a bunch of twigs and branches that might pop a tire? Peace :)

Dime

Wednesday, March 23rd 2011 My coworker who sits next to me was searching for coins in her desk drawer for a snack from the vending machine. I noticed what she was doing because it sounded like she was short on change and perhaps needed some. "Do you need some change?" I asked her. "Well, I only need a nickel. Do you have 5 cents?" She replied. "Of course, that's no big deal." I answered and gave her a dime which was the closest I had to a nickel. Then she came back and returned my money because the machine was out of order! Peace :)

Lottery Tickets

Tuesday, March 22nd 2011 A couple girls at work were collecting a dollar from anyone who wanted to join in on some lottery tickets in hopes of winning millions! I put in $1 without hesitation as I thought- there's no way I would miss out on this chance and if they won and I hadn't joined in, can you imagine how hard it would be to be the only one showing up for work as everyone else ran away with their fortune? And for this same reason, I got the idea to chip in $1 for Mr. J, who's absent today. He's usually the one organizing the office pools and he wouldn't be too happy if he missed out on the big bucks either. Now, we just need some good luck! Peace :)

Walking the Dog

Monday, March 21st 2011

We are in the midst of a 10-day dogsitting adventure and I know the sweet black lab, Miss J, would love to go on a walk everyday, but today was the first time I took her out. She realized what we were about to do and as I was putting on my shoes, she nearly knocked me over by jumping up onto me. It was nothing short of hilarious.

Off we went for a walk up the street, stopping to check out every piece of grass and all the trees along the way. I have to say, it was quite relaxing and a nice way to start the evening after a long day of work.

Peace :)

Couple Quarters

Sunday, March 20th 2011

I was in line at the same grocery store that fooled me with the old magazine at the checkout line today (the same issue is still there by the way) and there was the Sunshine Division donation box staring me down. I put a couple quarters in this time which I know isn't much, but I wanted to give something while I'm there buying all this food for our house, at least this helps contribute toward some food for others.

Peace :)

Ride Home for D

Saturday, March 19th 2011

My mom came up to spend the day with me and also stay the night! I was so excited, I couldn't stop smiling all morning and D was lovingly teasing me about my excitement.

Mom my and I drove all over the state it felt like (although that's an exaggeration) and it was then after 9pm when we were finishing dinner and I decided to offer D a ride home from the basketball game he was at with his buddies. I didn't necessarily feel like driving near the coliseum where traffic would be horrendous, but it made more sense to go that route.

So I called and asked if he'd like us to pick him up and I think he was pretty excited to avoid the train and a spendy cab ride home. And, in the end, traffic wasn't too bad afterall!

Peace :)

Snack from Snack Machine Offer

Friday, March 18th 2011

The head manager at my office sent me an email today, asking if I could go to the lunchroom and make up a plate of food and deliver it to her in her meeting. I was surprised by the request, but nevertheless was happy to do it (plus it gave me a minute to get away from my desk and walk around). When I got to the lunchroom the caterer apologized and advised that there was no food left.

I went back to my desk and sent her an email to let her know. I wanted to offer something else because I'm sure she was hungry since it was after 2pm already, so I asked if she'd like me to get something out of the snack machine and take to her. I know that's not necessarily the greatest offer and I thought about offering to pick up a sandwich, but thought that might be too much.

She thanked me, but declined. Oh well!

Peace :)

Brownies & Coffee

Thursday, March 17th 2011

I always wanted to send my dad a Valentine's treat like I usually do, but since time kind of got away from me last month, I'm finally sending him something today. Homemade brownies and a pound of ground coffee!

Chocolate and coffee are two of his favorites (that must be where I get it) so he'll probably be pretty excited when the package arrives. I just hope the brownies are still somewhat fresh by the time they get there!

Peace :)

Wedding Magazine

Wednesday, March 16th 2011

Here I am watching my pennies after a big vacation and lots of unexpected expenses popping up left and right, but I couldn't stop myself from an impulse purchase at the grocery store checkout line- a new edition of the local wedding magazine! Now that the Spring & Summer issues are coming out, I am excited to see all the new colors and styles.

When I got home, I was so disappointed to find that I already had the same magazine! How could I forget? Why did they put it at the checkout counter when it was so old? I'm at the store all the time and it wasn't there before. I can't blame the store for fooling me and I should have paid better attention, but you know how it is when someone's in line behind you waiting for you to hurry up and pay?

So I had an idea. My co-worker Miss M's daughter is getting married this summer too and will be in town this weekend to visit, so I'll give the magazine to Miss M to share with her daughter! And that's what I did today. Hopefully they'll find some helpful tips and ideas or just have fun looking at the photos :)

Tsunami Recovery Donation

Tuesday, March 15th 2011

After placing a deposit in the ATM this morning, there was an option to make a donation to help the recovery of the recent tsunami in Japan. I'd been thinking of looking for a place to do this and here it is where I least expected it! I didn't give much, only $2, but I'd like to save up a few more dollars and contribute again in the next week or so. It's a start!

Peace :)

Hello

Monday, March 14th 2011

I sure am glad I had today off from work. We arrived home after midnight last night, so it was the biggest treat to get to sleep in, unpack our luggage,do laundry and spend the day recuperating!

I was on a walk home from the grocery store and a man was tucked away in a nook between 2 buildings. He almost startled me when he spoke, and I hesitated to give him full attention but when I realized all he wanted was to say hi, I kindly said "hello". Simple as that. I could tell he was pleased to be acknowledged as he was nearly hiding away on the street.

Peace :)

Parking Fees

Sunday, March 13th 2011

After a long flight home and late arrival at almost midnight, we learned that the train wouldn't be running late enough to get home. We got a ride to the airport last week with our friends J & S, but told them we'd just take the train home and save them the extra stop so late at night. Now we had to ask them for a ride after all. We could have taken a cab I suppose, but there would go another $35 so instead we can give more money to our friends.

We planned to pay for half the parking & gas, but now that they gave us a ride home too, we paid for all of it. They didn't want to take it, but we insisted. It's worth it to us and we are so thankful for them to have given us a ride to & from the airport. Thanks J & S!

Peace :)

Cash Gift

Saturday, March 12th 2011

I went back and forth trying to decide if we should order a gift for the bride & groom off of their registry or give them the simple gift of cash. D thinks everyone prefers cash and we should give them that, but sometimes I feel that doesn't show much thought.

Well, when it came down to it, I decided cash will be fine (and though you can't see it, there was probably more thought put in to this than a typical gift anyway!). Plus, if they're on their honeymoon when a big package is delivered from their registry, what if there's no where for it to be dropped off at their apartment? Cash will be safer I suppose. Here I go thinking more about it...

Peace :)

Cupcake

Friday, March 11th 2011

Further more, we started the day off by walking around the City- first stop breakfast. D's brother then took us to a famous bakery where I bought a cupcake for his fiance (who was working today and unable to join us) and one for myself to try later since I'm too full from breakfast still.

Off we go to see some more sights! The weather is improving and looks like the sun is coming out. It's probably time for a cocktail.

Peace :)

Lighting of the Candle

Thursday, March 10th 2011

We made the red-eye flight and are in NY! After what feels like days without a shower, we spent the morning walking around town, had a quick breakfast, coffees, everyone bought umbrellas when the rain started unexpectedly, toured Central Park, mimosas overlooking the pond- just to describe the beginning of the day.

The most special part of the morning was a tour of St. Patrick's Cathedral. There, I lit a candle for my Grandma B and said a prayer. It was the first I'd heard of this tradition and it was so special. There is a donation box next to the candles where we put money in too.

I love you Grandma.

Peace :)

Tip for Nail Techs

Wednesday, March 9th 2011

We are leaving for New York tonight to attend a wedding this weekend and I thought, I haven't had my nails done since last summer (feels like anyway), so maybe I should have them painted professionally for this occasion!

The people were so nice, did a fabulous job and I tipped them well for it! What a treat it was...

SMART- Misbehaving & Behaving

Tuesday, March 8th 2011

Today's SMART reading went better than it has the past few weeks. I've started to have a little difficulty with Mr. J because since he has become comfortable with me, he's begun to take control. I am not his teacher, but rather a volunteer who spends a mere 30 minutes with him. Where does my authority level start and stop? I'll say I would prefer to play it safe. So, as a result, Mr. J hasn't been reading much these past few weeks. He orders me to read to him instead.

But today went a little better and I really tried to manage the situation as best as I could- without getting walked all over.

On the other hand, Mr. J.S., is continuing to read better as well as treating me more and more like a friend which makes it really fun.

Peace :)

Caramels for Grandpa

Monday, March 7th 2011

When I was over at my Grandpa's house yesterday, he showed me a sugar free caramel candy he wants me to look for online since he can't find it in the stores anymore. So, tonight I did a search online and found it!

I first selected 5 bags, then changed the order to 7 bags! They don't look like they are very big and just in case they stop selling them online, he'll have enough to last a little while.

I used my grandpa's address for delivery so they'll arrive right on his front porch in the next week or so. I think I'd like to have candy delivered to my door one day too- how fun!

Peace :)

Church Offering

Sunday, March 6th 2011

It's a beautiful sunny morning and my mom and I picked up my grandmother and took her to Church. We arrived early which was fine with me since it gave us a chance to visit for a minute and meet some of my grandma's friends. The service was inspiring and peaceful. When it was offering time, my mom and I quietly got our wallets out.

We were the only ones to put cash on the plate and everyone else was using envelopes. "Is it ok if we don't use an envelope?" I asked quickly since it was coming near us. Before I could get an answer, there it was, so I tucked the money underneath the envelopes in hopes that was ok!

Peace :)

Wedding Gift

Saturday, March 5th 2011

My brother Mr. C is getting married today! He is marrying a beautiful girl named Miss B and they are wonderful together. This is going to be a very special day and I have butterflies in my stomach full of joy.

I have a gift ready to give them which I think they'll really enjoy. A beautiful picture frame that's meant for one of their wedding photos- although they can use it for whatever picture they want (or they can return it if they don't like it)! And then a Korean food cookbook. I picked this out because Korean food is Mr. C's favorite and the last time we were together a couple weeks ago, they both mentioned how they are looking forward to learning how to cook meals together once they move in with one another at their new home.

I can't wait to deliver the Mickey Mantle gift to my dad and the wedding gift to my brother and his new wife today!

Peace :)

Dog Bed

Friday, March 4th 2011

Today is my dad's birthday- Happy Birthday Dad! I'll be down to visit and celebrate tomorrow...

My co-worker, Mr F. adopted a puppy last night and I am so excited for him. He's been talking about getting for a while now and last night he found just the right one. He mentioned that he needs to buy a dog bed and I know Costco sells a really nice one for only $18. I know this because my mom bought one for my brother's dog, Mr. D, for Christmas and he loves it!

I told Mr. F about the bed, but he said he doesn't have a Costco card. I would have happily gone and bought it myself, but I'm trying not to spend too much right now. So, I offered to take him there this afternoon so he could buy the bed before the weekend and we did. I think the cute little puppy will sleep well tonight!

Peace :)

Miss J's Lunch

Thursday, March 3rd 2011

Speaking of Miss J...I wanted to help pay for some of the decorations she bought yesterday and before I realized the day was over and I forgot to give her cash. So, another opportunity popped up today and as we moved through the line at Subway, I quickly paid for her lunch before she knew it! She got her wallet out, but the lady said it was already taken care of :) Fun!

Peace :)

Potluck for Miss M's Birthday

Wednesday, March 2nd 2011

Today is the 3rd birthday of the week for someone I know- my coworker Miss M! Miss J helped organize a potluck and also bought the decorations which was so generous ;) Almost everyone brought a dish, some big, some small, some homemade and some bought. It turned out to be a great variety and looked wonderful all set up.

I made spinach & artichoke dip early this morning and set it out with all the other goodies. It didn't take too much work but a few people wanted the recipe so I think they liked it. Thanks to Miss J for putting it all together!

I hope you had a wonderful birthday Miss M! :)

Dinner with the Neighbors

Tuesday, March 1st 2011

Last week during our power outage, D became acquainted with our neighbor down at the pub where they were both having a beer while they were locked out of the condo building. What better place to wait, don't you agree? As it turns out, D invited our neighbor and his fiance to come over for dinner and tonight ended up working for all of us.

They live right next door and I am excited to get to know them a little and maybe become friends. It's been a long time since we moved in and I feel guilty that we haven't had them over before now. Oh well, better late than never!

So I thought and thought about what to make and decided on enchiladas with a side of salad. And, of course, chips, salsa and bean dip for an appetizer! It was fairly easy to make the dinner and the best part was enjoying the company and visiting while the enchiladas baked in the oven. It's nice when you don't have to stand over the stove the whole night (as we've done before).

It was a pleasant evening and we had a lot in common to talk about- such as the fact that they are getting married the weekend before we are!

Peace :)

Mickey Mantle Gift

Monday, February 28th 2011

My dad's birthday is coming up this weekend, so I came up with an idea today of what to get him- a Mickey Mantle (his all-time favorite baseball player) theme gift. I went online and found a t-shirt, black & white photograph, and a book all about Mickey Mantle. I ordered the t-shirt and picture on a 2 day rush and then decided I'll just go down to the bookstore near my house to get the book and save on the rush delivery fee. Good idea huh? If I knew where they sold the t-shirt and picture, I'd drive there too but it's so much easier to order online!

I think he's going to really like this gift and I can't wait to give it to him this Saturday when I go down to visit.

Peace :)

Happy Birthday Miss K

Sunday, February 27th 2011

Today is our friend Miss K's birthday, so we went out to brunch with her and her boyfriend at a yummy restaurant that serves delicious breakfasts (and lunches if you so choose to order that)! We had a fun time toasting the birthday girl and telling stories about the weekend.

Then, somehow we ended up going to the hardware store on our way home to get some tools to hang up our new picture. We all said in 3 different versions to Miss K jokingly, "Was this the place you always dreamed of going on your birthday?" She didn't mind a bit!

I didn't particularly want to go there, but if it was up to me, our picture wouldn't be hung up for at least 6 more months, so I went along and supported the decision to stop there. Just go with the flow is what I try to practice these days...

Peace :)

"Hi There"

Saturday, February 26th 2011

D and I went on a walk downtown today to do a little shopping after breakfast. This is my ideal day! Brunch with D, walking around, shopping and maybe a cocktail or two along the way. Down the sidewalk, we came up behind a man who has some kind of disability, you could tell by the way he was walking. He was moving along quickly, but it didn't look easy. When we got closer to him, he turned around and looked at me.

I said, "Hi there" in a friendly voice and smiled. "Hi" he said back.

It's amazing how good it can feel just to say hi to a stranger you pass on the street.

Peace :)

Miss K's Birthday

Friday, February 25th 2011

Our friends are getting together for Miss K's birthday tonight at a restaurant near my work. D picked me up and we had plenty of time to stop at the store to pick up a card & gift for her. D did a nice job choosing a funny card right away. I usually take 10 minutes to find the right card for someone, but I let him decide this time and it saved us a lot of time.

We thought about a bottle of wine for a gift, but then I remembered she just got a new phone and a gift card for music on her phone would be perfect! So, we bought that and then signed the card out in the car before going into the restaurant. I'm always afraid the person I'm signing the card for will catch me putting their gift together at the last possible minute in my car, but it's not a big deal right? This has been a crazier week than usual so that's my reasoning for putting this together so late. Usually I don't have an excuse.

Peace :)

Cup of Coffee

Thursday, February 24th 2011

We woke up to snow this morning just as predicted! Well, not quite as much as the weathermen predicted, but a little over an inch. D gave me a ride downtown so I could take the train to work since my car couldn't make it down the hill from his parent's house.

I walked past a homeless man wrapped up in a blanket as I was going into the coffee shop. He stopped me and asked if I could get him a hot cup of coffee.

"Yes, maybe." I responded with my usual indefinite answer. I don't want to commit in case he's not there when I come out (which has happened before). So I feel better if I don't make a promise, but in this case I had the intention to buy him a cup of coffee and did just that.

I got a large size in hopes it will help warm him up a little on this cold, snowy day. I'm just now thinking I should have got him a pastry for breakfast too. I'll remember that next time. He thanked me and held the warm cup in his hands with his blanket around his shoulders.

Peace :)

$2, Tulips, Wine & Cookies

Wednesday, February 23rd 2011

Happy birthday I.D. and Miss C! Hope it's a great day for both of you...

We are now running on power from a generator at the condo, but the water still isn't on. I thought about staying home tonight, but without a shower or flushing capability, it could've been rough. So I called D's mom to see if we could stay over for the 2nd night in a row. "I left the bed up just for you in case you needed to!" She answered so welcoming.

To complicate things a little more, we are expecting to get a few inches of snow tonight! D's parents live at a higher elevation and my car won't make it up and down the hills, so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

But in case I get stranded on my way there, I stopped to fill up with gas first. It was so cold outside and since people were being so generous with me, I wanted to give back. So I got out $2 and gave to the man filling up my gas tank. He looked down at it as he was walking away and then he started to jog! It felt so good to see his reaction.

After that, I stopped at the store to pick up some wine for D's parents and a bunch of tulips for D's mom. I was feeling so good that I just wanted to do more and more for others. I talked to a lady on the wine aisle who I met again on the candy aisle and then she ended up behind me at the checkout counter, so we were laughing about that.

Luckily for me, the girl scouts were selling cookies outside, so I bought a box of those too and took off up the hill!

Peace :)

Yellow Caution Tape

Tuesday, February 22nd 2011

There was a small fire in the basement of our condo building today which led to the shutting off of our power & water starting today and ending who knows when. When I got home tonight, I thought it would be back on but the building and the entire block was pitch dark. It was kind of spooky because there were big trucks, bright lights, loud construction noises, and workers all around. It felt like I was in a movie where something bad happens and when all the residents come home from work, they find they are locked out of their home due to the hazardous event.

I was walking by the parking garage where it looked like a woman was driving her car out of a black hole (the driveway to the basement was so dark I don't know how she made it out but she did). There was yellow caution tape tied across the garage and no one was allowed to drive in. She was about to get out and move the tape or something when a man standing near held up one end and it only made sense that I would hold up the other end.

So there we stood, holding the tape up as high as we could, which was just high enough for her car to drive under.

This wasn't exactly the night I was expecting to have, but it sure is an interesting one!

Peace :)

Car For Sale Scam

Monday, February 21st 2011

Both my dad and brother are in the market for a new vehicle (new to them I mean, not necessarily a "new" car). I decided to go online and do a little searching for them and found what was a too-good-to-be-true advertisement. It was the perfect pick-up truck for only $2,999!! I thought- what do I have to lose? The lady selling it is named Margaret and she just posted the ad a few minutes ago. This could be good...

So I sent Margaret an email to inquire about the pick-up. I was pretty excited to tell D about it when he got home, but he didn't give me quite the reaction I was expecting. He knew it was most likely a scam. "But maybe it's real!" I replied with high hopes.

Sure enough, about an hour later I received a long email reply to say they would ship the vehicle to me from Alaska and I'd have 5 days to return it if I didn't like it. On and on the email went, and D said his friend received the exact same email a few days prior! I went back online and the ad was gone- probably because they had already been reported.

Oh well. I'll keep trying!

Peace :)

Crab Bisque Soup

Sunday, February 20th 2011

My mom is coming up today to go with me to pick up my wedding dress! I am so excited about it and can't wait to try it on again.

Earlier this week I bought the ingredients to make crab bisque soup that I planned to give my mom so she can make it at home for her and my dad. At the last minute this morning, I realized I didn't buy the fresh crab yet (I didn't want to buy it too far in advance) so I hurried to the store and picked it up just in time. As I turned the corner at my house, my mom was at the intersection too!

I had the ingredients set out on the counter to show her, along with a few other goodies (pictures & candles). I think she is excited to make the soup. I know I would be excited to eat it :)

Peace :)

French Cookbook

Saturday, February 19th 2011

My friend, Miss C is celebrating her 30th birthday tonight at a party thrown by her sister. The invite said "No Gifts" but I don't like going to a party without taking something. And this is my friend of 22 years! The only thing is, what if I'm the only one to show up with a gift? That's awkward too.

So after stressing for the past 5 days, I decided to walk down to the bookstore and pick up a French cookbook for her. I think she'll love it, especially since she's into French cooking right now and I didn't notice any French cookbooks on her shelf the other night when we were over for dinner.

I wrapped it in a pretty bag and wrote a note inside the front cover. Now I just hope I'm not the only one to show up with a gift!

Peace :)

Nail in Garage

Friday, February 18th 2011

As I was walking through the parking garage this morning, I kicked a steel nail on the ground by accident. I heard it "clink" and looked down to see what it was. I left it there and kept walking toward my car. About 1/2 a second later, I thought- I remember stepping on a nail as a youngster and it went right through my foot! What if this somehow hurts someone or if a car drives over it and gets a flat tire?

The chances are probably slim, but I turned around and went back to pick it up (the whole 5 steps it was). We'll never know what could have happened, but I felt good picking it up and preventing the possibility of perhaps, nothing...or something.

Peace :)

Rambunctious Kids

Thursday, February 17th 2011

Back at SMART today, the kids were rambunctious! I think they must have just finished gym class or something.

I had a difficult time getting my student to focus on the book he picked out and asked me to read. It's an interesting feeling to be a volunteer trying to help out because how much can you try to make the kids sit down and mind you? I don't think they want me scolding the boy, but at the same time, it's a waste of time to sit there while he does everything but read in the 30 minutes I have with him. I did my best to be patient and just start reading to him, rather than him reading to me.

I ended up reading the book quickly cover to cover and then he was excited to get to the "I Spy" book full of hidden pictures we have to look for. Maybe I don't like that book too much because I have a hard time finding the hidden items?

Peace :)

Sugar Substitute for Gramps

Wednesday, February 16th 2011

My Grandfather called the other day to see if I could look for the sugar-free sugar substitute he likes. I haven't looked for it in about a year because they stopped selling it nearly 4 years ago and it's been impossible to find since, however it's not a bad idea to see if it's back on the market today.

I searched and searched online getting my hopes up when I found some information on it, only to be crushed to see the article was written in 2007. I did find more of a different brand that I baked him a cake with last year and I think I'll order more of that for now and see if his favorite brand comes back one day soon.

I'll keep trying Gramps!

Book Contest at SMART

Tuesday, February 15th 2011

I missed last week's SMART reading due to a 3-hr training at work, so this week I'm volunteering twice- today and this coming Thursday. I'm not required to, but I know they are short on Thursday readers so I offered. I would do it every Thursday, but with the travel time it takes about 1.5 hours and with things so busy at work, that's tough to do 2 times a week.

But today was great. They're having a book contest where each student reads 6 nominated books- one of them a childhood favorite of mine- "Goodnight Moon". So Mr. J finished his 6th book today and voted on his favorite which happened to be the one we read today! "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day"

I am wondering if he picked it because it's fresh in his mind since he hasn't seen the others in 1-2 weeks or if he really liked it the best. It's probably the same with the other kids too. We'll see which one wins!

Peace :)

Valentine's Day Dinner

Monday, February 14th 2011

Happy Valentine's Day! Nearly every male I've talked to in the past couple days hasn't quite expressed the enthusiasm for the holiday the same way the females have. Most guys say, "it's a way to make people spend money" and most of the girls are hoping for some well thought out romantic surprise from their honey. Why is this? Maybe we girls should celebrate the holiday by buying each other treats instead and take the pressure off of our male counterparts... ;)

As for celebrating this year, my friend invited us along with another couple over for a beautiful dinner tonight. We enjoyed a delicious meal of pasta, warmed kale & white bean salad, strawberries, champagne, chocolates and cupcakes for dessert (I brought the cupcakes & wine and Miss K brought the strawberries and chocolates)!

It turned out to be a really fun evening, sharing old stories and laughing a lot. Thanks Miss C for hosting a wonderful night!

Knife

Sunday, February 13th 2011

D and I were browsing through a kitchen shop today and in the knife section, we found a knife that had come out of the package that could easily cut someone if they weren't paying attention. All the others were wrapped in heavy plastic, but this one had nothing to protect it, just a blade sticking out.

I pulled it off the shelf and brought it to the clerk's attention. He thanked me, started talking to someone else and then as I was walking away I saw him put it right back on the shelf! D started laughing and my eyes opened wide. I know it's not supposed to be that way because all of the others on the shelf were properly wrapped.

I don't know what else I could have done? I guess just hope that no one grabs it without caution.

Peace :)

Flower Girl & Ring Bearer

Saturday, February 12th 2011

Since we are having our wedding this summer, we need a flower girl and ring bearer and tonight was the night for us to ask D's brother and sister-in-law if their twin children would like to fill those roles.

They said they'd like to so now we are set! We'll decide what they should wear later, but for now we're glad to know they want to be in the wedding party.

Peace :)

Hour Glass

Friday, February 11th 2011

Valentine's Day is coming up and I have a little present ready to give D. I thought we'd exchange gifts later this weekend, but when I got home from work he had a surprise for me- a beautiful necklace!

So, I hurried back down to the garage where I was hiding his present in the trunk of my car, wrapped it quickly and brought it upstairs. He opened it to find a nice-sized hour glass with an attached stand. It is really cool and I found it at our favorite nautical home decoration store. I hope he likes it as much as I do :)

Happy Valentine's Day D!

Peace :)

Participation

Thursday, February 10th 2011

We had another all-department meeting today with about 75 people in attendance. When I found out I had to participate in a role-play demonstration in front of everyone, I nearly fainted. I thought maybe I can sneak out and go home without anyone noticing. Or maybe I'll pass on the job to my co-worker next to me...

Well, none of that happened and I ended up doing what was planned. It wasn't as bad as I thought because at least I didn't have to speak (although I did have to speak when we introduced ourselves!). I remember hearing people laugh at me, but it didn't bother me. It kind of helped that I could laugh at myself too. With my face the color of a tomato no doubt about it.

Peace :)
Wednesday, February 9th 2011

After an all-department party directly after work at the bowling alley, I was exhausted and driving home at 9:30pm only to find my gas tank was near empty! I told myself I wasn't going to let it get low because it always seems inconvenient to stop when I have no choice.

Luckily there was a gas station right off the highway half-way home. I pulled up to the tank and a man came walking over at a pace that made me think I could fall asleep before he got to my window. He didn't say anything but I asked him to "fill it with regular" and he did.

He took a long time to put the nozzle away and grab my receipt, but I had a dollar ready to give him when he returned. He gave a slight nod and folded it up before placing in his pocket.

Let's see how fast I can get home and get to bed...

Peace :)

Culinary School Dinner

Tuesday, February 8th 2011

A few weeks ago our friends made reservations for the 4 of us to have dinner at the culinary school not far from my house. D and I went before and had such a great experience, so our friends wanted to see what it's all about. However, tonight's experience wasn't quite the same as last time.

Our server was a little confused about things and to start the night off, he served me a bowl of beef stew which he said was their vegetarian "carrot and lentil" soup. Since I don't eat meat, this was a shocker to realize I was swallowing beef! I didn't want to bring it up, but the guys told him and he felt very sorry.

There were a few more mistakes throughout the night and I tried giving many compliments and was very nice to our server regardless of the way he was blaming others for the mishaps and all that went wrong.

In the end, we had a fun time and the best part with no errors was the dessert! We'll go back again someday and give it another try.

Peace :)

Pedestrian

Monday, February 7th 2011

On my way to work this morning there were more pedestrians crossing the street in front of me than usual. I let the first 2 people go at the 4-way intersection, then I was ready to hit the gas pedal when I saw another pedestrian nearing the crosswalk. I could have easily gone, but decided to wait and let her go ahead.

It was a cold dark morning afterall and I was warm in my car with the heat on, music playing and coffee in the cup holder. Why rush?

Peace :)

Crab Dip

Sunday, February 6th 2011

The Super Bowl is on today and D asked me yesterday if I would make crab dip for his potluck at work. Of course I will! I love making appetizers and it's been a while since I spent time in the kitchen so this will be fun. I ended up running out of time last night and didn't want to get up early to make it this morning, so I delivered it to his work today before the game started.

And the best part is...I saved some for myself to enjoy later!

Peace :)

Mail on Sidewalk

Saturday, February 5th 2011

My brother and I went on a walk today down the street to visit our Grandma and Grandpa on our Mom's side. We had a nice visit about every day stuff and a little talk on my upcoming wedding this summer.

On our way home, we found an important-looking piece of mail on the sidewalk addressed to an unrecognizable name. We matched up the address to the house over yonder and I rang the doorbell. A lady came quickly and I explained what I was there for and handed her the mail.

She was appreciative and that was that. On we went with D.Z. leading us the rest of the way home.

Peace :)

Wonderful Celebration of Grandma

Friday, February 4th 2011

I don't really know how to describe everything that happened today, but I can say that it was a wonderful celebration of my Grandma's life. After the service at the Church, we had a reception with all of her family and friends. This was the first time I've actually sat down to eat at a funeral and it was pretty nice. Visiting with different people, watching a slideshow of great photos bringing back fun memories, and reflecting on thoughts.

Then we went to the cemetary where we had another small ceremony. Before we were getting ready to leave, I realized we needed some flowers for Grandma and my uncle had the same idea too. So my mom and I went to the car where we had a bouquet of Grandma's favorite red roses and white lilies. My mom is an expert at arranging them, so she took care of that and they looked beautiful.

We are praying for you Grandma and we love you so much.

Peace :)

Rosary

Thursday, February 3rd 2011

My Grandma left a note in her letter to the family that she would like a Rosary Prayer the evening before her funeral. So that's what we did tonight.

It was the first time I've heard the Prayer. I felt emotional and peaceful both at the same time. The Prayer lasted approximately 45 minutes and afterward the family gathered around to tell funny stories and give each other lots of hugs. As Grandma was lying there in her beautiful casket surrounded by the prettiest flowers I've ever seen, I know she was watching over us and laughing along with us.

Peace :)

Happy Birthday Miss J and Tip on Discount

Wednesday, February 2nd 2011

Today is my dear friend Miss J's birthday so I sent her a message first thing in the morning to wish her a wonderful day. Happy Birthday Miss J!

Then I felt my appetite come back to a normal level this afternoon and I started craving Chinese food. I began imagining the taste of the hot mustard, fried spring rolls, fried rice and soy sauce. When I talked to D, I asked if that sounded ok to him too and it did. We went to a great restaurant downtown where we had a buy-one-get-one-free card.

After a fabulous dinner, the server brought our bill and took our discount card. I get the feeling that the servers always fear they will be tipped on the discounted price in situations like this, so I want to compensate by giving an even bigger tip than we would have if we were paying full price. It doesn't make much sense, but the restaurant only had a few tables the whole evening so I wanted to give a couple extra dollars as a tip to make up for the lack of business tonight. Plus, they did a great job and made the experience super pleasant.

Peace :)

SMART

Tuesday, February 1st 2011

Feeling a little better today, I was back at work and the normal routine. I got to go to the SMART reading this afternoon which is always a joy. One of my usual readers was absent so a substitute 2nd grader filled in. He was so polite and quietly spoken. He surprised me after a few minutes when he started using words in our conversation that I barely know! Such an intelligent child he seems to be. I think he can use some extra practice on his reading, but as far as his conversation outside the text, he knows what he's talking about.

I look forward to next Tuesday's reading.

Peace :)

How Are You?

Monday, January 31st 2011

I asked permission from my boss yesterday if I could take today off and she said "absolutely". I was sure glad because I ended up staying in bed until late afternoon. I got up a couple times, but quickly went back to the only place I could find comfort- my bed. I don't know if my pounding headache, sore throat, dwindling voice and heartburn are all because I've caught an illness or they're the result of exhaustion and sadness.

Just like yesterday, I thought it might help to get some fresh air and since I hadn't eaten all day, I walked to the sandwich shop 2 blocks up the street.

The man who made my sandwich was really friendly and kept asking how I was doing, how my day was going, etc. I then placed a $1 tip in the tip box at the register and he said, "Thank you, much appreciated" as he nodded to me.

This reminds me of something I noticed the past couple of days. You know how it's the common gesture to ask others "How are you?" or "How's it going?"? I realize the question might not be asked out of true caring of how someone is doing and rather used as an acknowledgment that you're there, but I learned that the best answer is a positive one.

I haven't given this much thought because usually I am doing fine and that's my answer. But the past couple days, the truth is, I'm not doing well or good or fine. So do I answer dishonestly? I looked it up and the answer is yes. Your answer should be positive regardless of how you're really doing. And that's what my answer has been for people like the guy at the sandwich shop.

I find it difficult to avoid the truth, but I guess in the end, why would anyone want a depressing answer? They probably don't. So that's why it's best to make them feel better and reply, "Fine thank you. How are you?"

Peace :)

Run With D.Z.

Sunday, January 30th 2011

Feeling exhausted after not sleeping much again, I didn't feel like doing anything today. But I thought it might help to get some exercise and fresh air. So, I asked my brother who was also staying at my parents' house if I could take his puppy D.Z. for a run.

D.Z. got so excited when I started putting my shoes on as my brother hooked up his leash. Now you see, he's a pretty big 1 year old dog and could probably run 5x faster than I can. So we took off sprinting down the street, D.Z. dragging me by the arm as I was holding on to his leash with all the strength I had.

We didn't last long (well I didn't anyway) and headed back home. I think D.Z. had a great time exploring the neighborhood. Although I ran faster than I have since I raced in a middle school track meet and was nervous when other dogs started barking at us, it was good for both of us to jog-I-mean-sprint around the 1-mile block. Time for a nap now.

Peace :)

We Love You Grandma

Saturday, January 29th 2011

I could hardly sleep at all last night and kept checking to see if my parents had come home yet. I almost drove down to the hospital in the middle of the night and now I wish I would have. I didn't want to call and wake them in case they were all sleeping next to Grandma peacefully, but it turns out they hardly slept a wink either.

When I spoke to them at 7am, things were still the same. I waited for them to come home and hoped we'd all go back together after I fixed them breakfast while they showered.

Then, at 8am we got a call from Uncle L that Grandma passed away. Even though we knew it was coming at any moment, it still felt like a dagger through my heart. My heart that was already broken.

I got to kiss her goodbye and tell her how much I love her one last time and the rest of the day was spent with hugs, tears and love with all the family together.

We love you so much Grandma.

Peace...

Prayers for Grandma

Friday, January 28th 2011

Today I received the most sad news I've ever received. I found out that my Grandma B was unconcious in the hospital and would only survive another couple hours, up to a couple days at the most. She was sleeping and had no chance of waking.

I left work in tears that I was trying to hold back so as not to cause a scene, met D and he drove me down to the hospital (in my hometown an hour away). It was the longest drive imaginable. It felt as if the world had stopped and it was silent all around. Only the car was moving in and out of all the other traffic. I wanted to wake up from the nightmare.

We spent hours and hours next to Grandma lying peacefully in her hospital bed. I didn't want to leave her side. I continued to pray that she felt no pain and was having the sweetest dreams of her life. I prayed that she was comfortable and on her way to Heaven as soon as she was ready.

The doctor said this would be the way he would want to go if he had the choice and that provided slight relief in our aching hearts.

The whole family gathered around her bedside for the entire evening and I think we each sat in every chair at least 4 times- and there were 10 chairs. No one could sit still.

I waited for my Dad to arrive after flying home from a business trip and by this time it was getting close to 11pm. I filled up my Dad's cup of coffee a couple times and tried to comfort him too.

It was getting late and I wanted to take D home to get some rest, so we said our goodbyes and went back to my parents house, leaving my Mom, Dad and Aunt T there to watch over Grandma.

Peace...

Snorkeling Tips for Miss M

Thursday, January 27th 2011

One of my coworkers is going on a cruise next week and stopping off at the island in Honduras where D and I lived a couple summers ago. I am so excited for her to get to see it and the beauty it holds, so I started looking up a couple pictures and tips to send her.

She told me they wanted to snorkel, so I told her the best spot for that and how to get to the best bar on the island for a refreshing drink afterward!

I hope you have a blast Miss M!

Peace :)

Gloves Off

Wednesday, January 26th 2011

I was at the sandwich shop today and everytime I go there, it seems the person in line ahead of me orders their sandwich with salami & pepperoni (or any other kind of meat for that matter). Since I don't eat meat, I have always been a little disturbed by this and one time I could even taste a little pepperoni flavor on my sandwich!

A man behind me once asked the worker to change their gloves before making his vegetarian sandwich and I have always wanted to ask the same, but didn't have the nerve.

So, after 6 months and 100 sandwiches later (that's a guess), I told the girl I'd like a vegetarian sandwich and she instantly took her gloves off before I even had to ask! So that's all it takes!

I gave her a bigger than usual tip today for doing that and I might go back tomorrow for the same thing!

Peace :)

Coffee Pot

Tuesday, January 25th 2011

This morning I was in the break room and noticed the coffee was finished brewing and quickly cooling off since the thermos lid was open, waiting for someone to close it and starting pouring their coffee!

So, I put the pot together and set it in it's place on the counter, then emptied out the used grounds from the machine.

I wasn't going to be drinking any of it today, but I didn't want the others to end up with luke-warm coffee!

Peace :)

Paper Towel

Monday, January 24th 2011

As I was walking through the parking lot to my car after work, I saw a crinkled up paper towel on the ground. I clearly saw it, but kept walking. Then I stopped, turned around and went back to pick it up.

I was a little concerned regarding how dirty it could have been, but it didn't look like it had been used for much so I dropped it on the backseat floor of my car and threw it away as soon as I got home.

I washed my hands with lots of soap & warm water before doing anything else!

Peace :)

Re-usable Grocery Bag

Sunday, January 23rd 2011

I finally remembered my re-usable, environmentally friendly grocery bag today when I went to the grocery store. I always seem to leave it at home when I need it or I find it in my car full of other items and it's easier to take the disposable bags they give you at the store.

But I didn't have to feel guilty today with the cashier asking "Paper or plastic, Ma'am?" Instead, the lady said, "Thank you so much for bringing your own bag. It will really pay off in the end."

I haven't seen a clerk so passionate about this before, but it makes me want to put more of an effort to use my own bag every time I shop!

Peace :)

Brightly Colored Tops

Saturday, January 22nd 2011

I woke up this morning to see the sun gleaming through the windows and it felt like spring! We haven't had the sunshine like this in months it feels, although it hasn't really been that long. It was perfect timing, because my lovely mother drove up today to go shopping and to spend the day just the two of us.

We had a wonderful time and everywhere we went, people were very friendly. It felt extraordinarily pleasant and made the day that much better.

I gathered up some brightly colored tops that I haven't worn in a while and think my mom might like to have, along with some magazines- I know she loves magazines and I'm quickly taking after her (as I see a stack of 11 on my table)!

Thanks for one of the most wonderful days of my life, Mom.

Peace :)

Pasta Party for Miss V

Friday, January 21st 2011

Today was Miss V's last day working with us. She's now going to be a full time stay-at-home mom! Miss V was one of the first people I was trained by when I first started and I have never forgotten the way she was so nice to me.

I wanted to make sure we did something nice for her to celebrate her last day, so I did my best to organize a Pasta Party (pasta's her favorite) for lunch and ice cream for dessert. It turned out to be a great party with about 23 people!

I hope it delighted Miss V and I wish her the best in her new adventure.

Peace :)

Lunch for Miss J

Thursday, January 20th 2011

Last Friday, my amazing co-worker, Miss J, helped me out with a couple things that I am so grateful for. I wanted to show my appreciation so I offered to buy her lunch. Now, it wasn't exactly a fancy lunch, but it was our favorite Mexican food place which we hadn't been to in a long time. Yum!

Thanks again Miss J :)

Peace :)

Big Question for Miss A

Wednesday, January 19th 2011

Our wedding plans are just about ready to start rolling and the first task in order is to ask my cousin Miss A if she will be my Maid of Honor. I guess she would actually be called "Matron of Honor", but that's just a minor detail.

So my heart was beating fast with nervousness when I called her tonight but after some small talk I asked the big question. She said yes and seemed very excited! We both started to cry a tiny bit, but then kept talking about it while giggling at the same time. What a special conversation that I will remember forever!

Peace :)

SMART- Week 4

Tuesday, January 18th 2011

Today was my last day off on this 4-day weekend and I'm happy to say that I almost feel excited to go back to work tomorrow. It's a nice feeling that doesn't come around too often- probably because having this many days off in a row is rare so there's never a chance to miss it!

I went to my 4th SMART reading today at the elementary school and things are getting more comfortable all around. The students, the other volunteers, the coordinator...it's like we are all a team working together. Maybe they've all felt this way already, but since I was new to it all, it's taken me a few weeks to adjust :)

Both of my readers were in really good moods and excited to pick out their books to read, and also to pick out a book to take home!

Peace :)

Shirt for Miss C

Monday, January 17th 2011

I met my friend, Miss C today for happy hour at one of her favorite restaurants I had yet to try. And now I see why it's one of her favorites! I hadn't seen Miss C in quite some time, so it was nice to get together and catch up.

After we were getting up to leave, I remembered I brought a cute shirt to give her. I bought it for myself a couple months ago and never wore it because it just wasn't my style. It would look really good on her, so I asked if she'd like to have it and she did!

Peace :)

Smoked Salmon

Sunday, January 16th 2011

We asked for a late checkout today which gave us extra time to sleep in, exercise at the gym, sit in the sauna and swim before packing up and heading home. On the way home, we stopped at one of those roadside seafood counters where they sell the freshest fish in the state.

We were looking for something to take to D's parents as a little souvenir since we planned to stop by their house on our way home, but then we realized they took cash only and we had $8 to spend which might not be enough.

"Is $8 enough for a piece of smoked salmon?" I asked the lady.

"I'm sure we can find a piece for that price." She answered and started looking for one of the smaller pieces. (I was hoping it would be enough for a larger piece, but that's what I get for spending all of my cash at the casino and candy store!)

She gave us a piece that cost $9 after being weighed on the scale and said she'd put in $1 to cover the rest. So, I then started looking to see if I had any coins to add and found another 35 cents. I'm hoping she didn't have to use her own money, but that was very generous of her to offer and at least it was only 65 cents in the end.

D's parents wanted to share the salmon with us right away rather than save it, so we all got to try it and enjoy it together. What a great way to end a fabulous weekend.

Peace :)

Candy Shop

Saturday, January 15th 2011

After lunch, it only seemed appropriate to pop into the candy shop for a little sweet treat so it turned out to be quite convenient that there was a shop right next to where we had lunch! ;)

The lady was so happy to help us that she gave us samples of her freshly made peanut brittle, and continued to give us more free samples than I've ever seen and could hardly eat! "Try this chocolate, try this candy, here have one of these too..." she went on and on. We were laughing and eating more candy than you can imagine, but we couldn't say no to something the lady made herself. It was like a dream come true!

After receiving so many free pieces, I felt guilty and wanted to buy more than I originally planned. I thought we'd each pick out 1 or 2 pieces of chocolate, but then I ended up buying $6.50 worth of an assortment and when she wouldn't charge us for a bag of her freshly-made peanut brittle, I put the $3.50 change in her tip jar.

I probably should have tipped more on such a slow day for business with all the rain, but she was very grateful. And quite entertaining too, I should add.

Time for a nap and then more live music in the lounge. This weekend keeps getting better and better...

Peace :)

Live Band

Friday, January 14th 2011

D and I are at the beach for the weekend! I have been looking forward to this for months and the time has come! It's raining cats & dogs outside to the point where even the covered walkway is flooding in spots. The rain is coming down sideways so I don't expect we'll be going for a stroll along the beach anytime soon, but that's ok.

Tonight we went to the lounge for dinner at the lodge where we are staying. There was a live band playing which caught our attention more than the dining room holding only a table of 2. Granted, it was 9pm so the dinner rush was past, but we were looking for something a little more upbeat and the live music in the lounge was just the place.

For every song we requested, D would put $5 in the tip jar next to the stage. The duo was playing for a crowd of approximately 15, so we wanted to help them out and express our appreciation- along with the applause after every song they played.

It was so much fun hearing some songs I'd forgotten how much I love to hear. We didn't want them to ever stop! The service was great, the food was delicious and it was a wonderful night.

We'll be back for more tomorrow!

Peace :)

Dinner Ready

Thursday, January 13th 2011

I invited my friend Miss C to come over to my house tonight so we could visit, catch up on all the latest, and spend some time together since it has been about 3 months. I had enchiladas pre-made and ready to bake for dinner and the house cleaned up a bit too.

But then, it was soon 7pm (I was still working) and when I asked if she wanted to come over at 7:45, it was too late.

I still cooked the enchiladas and D & I ate the whole pan almost! Hopefully Miss C will be able to come over next week instead.

Peace :)

Purchase Transaction

Wednesday, January 12th 2011

I felt so tired after 10 hours of working, but I'm looking forward to a 4 day weekend coming up and have lots to get done before then. One task in particular is a home purchase loan that is expected to close in 2 weeks, but the buyers are hoping they can get the keys to the house sooner than that.

So, I decided to gather up some energy (a handful of Skittles) and I finished the file.

It felt really good to complete this project so fast and I think the buyers will be even more excited about how early they get the keys to their new house!

Peace :)

SMART- Week 3

Tuesday, January 11th 2011

My 3rd day volunteering for SMART and it just keeps getting better every time! J.S. came right over to my table with a big smile on his face and before he sat down said, "Should we go pick out a book?"

"Yes, we should! And we also have the Gingerbread Friends book to finish from last week if you want to?" I asked as we walked toward the bookshelf.

"Oh yeah! I want to finish that book first."

So he read as I listened and we both laughed at all the funny pictures. It was a great 30 minutes.

Then, J.C. came in and took J.S.'s spot at the table. It's amazing how much more shy one child can be compared to another. J.C. is very shy, but as the half hour went on, he started opening up a little. He told me about his parents living in different houses and how he has a pet rabbit at his mom's house.

"A pet rabbit!" I exclaimed with fascination. "What's it's name? What color is it?..." I began asking all sorts of questions.

He smiled and went back to reading until it was time to stop, and even then he snuck in another paragraph before getting up from the table. 30 minutes sure does go by quickly when you're having this much fun!

Children's Miracle Network

Monday, January 10th 2011

The grocery store is now collecting donations for the Children's Miracle Network so I accepted the cashier's invitation to add $1 to my total bill. She then asked what my name was so she could add it to the wall with all the other donors, but I was caught off guard and didn't really want my name on the wall, so I asked if she would put her name on it or the next person in line instead.

"Ok, I can do that." She said and started giggling as I thanked her and picked up my grocery bag.

Peace :)

Directions to Trolley

Sunday, January 9th 2011

I was on a jog around some nearby neighborhoods when a lady walking down the sidewalk stopped me.

"Do you know how to get to the trolley going that way?" She asked as she pointed toward the river.

I looked around to gather my sense of direction because I wasn't prepared with an answer right away and didn't know where we were exactly.

"Oh, I see the trolley station right over there." I said and pointed one block over to the one way street heading the opposite direction.

"Thank you." The lady replied and walked toward it.

I said something else to end the conversation as we parted (can't remember what I said because it wasn't important) but she wasn't listening anyway. So, off I continued jogging up the street!

Peace :)

Bride & Mother-of-the-Bride's Lunch

Saturday, January 8th 2011

My friend Miss K is getting married next summer and I am her maid of honor! I couldn't be more delighted to share her special day with her and be by her side for every moment of it.

We've gotten together a couple times and talked about the wedding, but today we drove down to a bridal gallery with our other friend Miss A to try on bridesmaid dresses! Miss K's mom, aunt and 3 cousins also met us there- 2 of her cousins will also be in the wedding so all 4 of us girls tried on dresses for about an hour or so.

It was a really fun time and she picked the one she like the best in a soft pink color. So we are all ready to go!

Afterward we were all hungry, so Miss K, her mom, Miss A and I walked down the street to a delicious restaurant for lunch.

On the walk there, Miss A and I decided we would split the bill when it came so that's what we did! It was fun to treat the bride and mother-of-the-bride to lunch on this memorable day.

Card & Pizza

Friday, January 7th 2011

Since tomorrow is one of my coworker's birthday, we wanted to do something for her today. I brought a card in for everyone to sign, another girl brought cake & a balloon and 2 of us picked up pizza for lunch.

I'm not sure how it took so much time to organize 2 cheese pizzas and a pepperoni pizza, but it did. However, I can say that it was worth it and everyone enjoyed it!

Peace :)

Man at the ATM

Thursday, January 6th 2011

I returned a movie tonight at the rental box inside the McDonald's located right across the street from our house. There was a rough looking man who probably didn't have a bath in a few days that came in soon after I did and he wasn't exactly sober. An old song came on and he started to dance around and sing along.

"You remember this song?" He asked me as I was waiting in line.

I usually don't ignore a person when they're talking to me, even if I don't know how to respond. So I answered, "Yes, this is a good song."

That was all I could come up with in hopes he didn't try to start dancing with me next.

Then I was at the rental box, just as I noticed the same man popped up at the ATM right next to me.

"How do I get my card to work?" He asked me as he was swiping it backwards. I tried to show him which direction to swipe it without actually taking the card from his hands. It took a minute but he got it to work and got his cash.

I found a movie at the same time and left the store carefully. I'm glad I could help him, but I'm also glad I didn't get asked to dance.

Peace :)

Christmas in April

Wednesday, January 5th 2011

My manager had a great idea today. She told me about a volunteer project called Christmas in April which she was involved in once with a different employer where a group of people go to an elderly person's home or someone in need of a little help around their home and you work all day to fix up the yard, paint walls, plant flowers, and clean it all up!

I thought this sounded like a great idea, so I sent an email to our Charity committee to see if it is something our department can organize this year.

I am hoping they'll let us and maybe this could become an annual tradition!

Peace :)
