It was a slightly different experience serving dinner at the Mission tonight than it has been in the past. Tonight, there was a group of 10 in to serve for their first time, plus Shawna and myself. Too many people in one kitchen. I decided to let the group take the front line (and dishes!) so they could really get the experience, while I hung out in the back re-stocking and making more and more batches of green beans!
It was kind of fun to learn some new tasks tonight, so if there's a time when we are really short-handed, I'll know how to handle it-hopefully. And Shawna didn't stop short of being the director of the kitchen, ordering us all around in her booming, yet friendly voice.
I realized I enjoy the interaction with those their for dinner more than hiding in the back cooking and cleaning. I thought about mingling with them in the dining area, and I did walk through once looking for an opportunity- and the confidence- to stop and chat. I didn't get any welcoming looks from anyone and kept walking on back to the kitchen. I felt like a coward in a way and I've got to work on this. Perhaps the more I do this, the easier it will become.
Shawna gave me a gift tonight that she had been telling me about for the past couple months, but kept forgetting to bring or not realizing I'd be there those same nights. It was a set of makeup that didn't fit her skin tone. The first night we met, she must have thought my skin was perfect for it because she never stopped talking about the makeup that she wanted to give me. It was so sweet and I'm trying to think of something to give her next time...

Graduation
Tuesday, July 27th 2010
One of my younger brothers, "C"(the middle one of 3) is about to graduate the Korean language program with the Air Force next week. He has succeeded in mastering the language and won the award for best speech in his class. He then presented the speech in front of 500 people! How cool is that?!
Next week he will graduate and move on to another location to continue his education. My dad and I mailed him a card with a little gift inside today. Congratulations C!

Dishes
Monday, July 26th 2010
D and I decided to get a new set of plain, white, light weight, typically boring, but standard dishes.
"Food always looks more appealing on a white plate," my mom would say. For some reason though, I never wanted plain white- until now.
So, I packed up our stylish and colorful previous set and thought who should I give this to? Maybe someone at work will be interested...
One of my co-workers, Miss L, was excited about them so I told her I'd bring them in to show her what they look like. She liked them, and after a few days of forgetting them in my car, today I made a point to give the set to Miss L. I hope she enjoys them :)
And, Mom, you were right, the food does look pretty darn good on a white plate!
Peace :)

Sunshine Division
Sunday, July 25th 2010
Today was spent relaxing, jogging (95 hot degrees so it was a short one!), 4 loads of laundry, grocery shopping, etc etc. At the grocery store, there is a canister collecting donations for the Sunshine Divison to support local familes so I added a little gift to the jar. Attached is the link if you're interested :)

Wedding #2
Saturday, July 24th 2010
Wedding #2 of the summer, 4 more to go! D and I couldn't figure out where the bride & groom were registered in time, so we got a card and put a little cash in it :)
The wedding was fabulous, a summer evening spent watching the sun go down while dancing, eating, and drinking delicious wine made right there at the very vineyard we were mingling through.
Congratulations to the newly married couple!

Foo-Foo Coffees
Friday, July 23rd 2010
Two co-workers of mine have been so kind to treat me to a coffee lately and it's passed time for me to treat them. We were all planning to go into work at 7 today (early compared to the normal time of 8:30am) and especially since it's Friday, I thought today would be a good day to offer!
They gave me their orders last night and this morning I picked up the carrier tray with all the foo-foo coffees we love :) It was a fun way to start the morning. It feels good to walk into the office with treats for others and see the reactions on their faces. You should try it and see!

15 cents
Thursday, July 22nd 2010
I've been spending most of my time at work lately (about 70% to be exact-BTW- can "about" and "exact" go together in the same sentence?), so this leads to most of my stories originating at work! Like this one, which is not the first time I've done this:
After forgetting my breakfast, I made my way to the snack machine at around 10am :) The Nature Valley bars are my new favorite so it didn't take long to make a decision when I saw one for 85 cents. I put my money in and the 15 cents change I left in the machine. Not much, but hey!
Should I say I was back later for a bag of Cheetos? Yes, that's true. It was almost 7pm after all and I was hungry! The 15 cents was gone. Mission accomplished.
Peace :)

Shred Bin
Wednesday, July 21st 2010
Rumor has it that the compliance department is coming around soon to check that we are following all security rules in our office. This means they will make sure our desks, computers, file cabinets and any confidential information are all locked up and put away- amongst other unknown things, I'm sure.
As I was leaving tonight, I noticed my co-worker's (who sits next to me) shred bin was full of paper (which includes confidential information as I discussed earlier). Now Miss J is aware of the fact that we are supposed to empty our bins each night before leaving (she is reading this now and laughing :)). But sometimes she forgets and tonight was one of those nights.
I thought- I'm so tired I just want to go home. Nothing will happen and I'm sure no one will be here to check tonight.
Second thought- That's not the right way to look at it. It will take 5 seconds and it could really be worth it!
So I emptied Miss J's bin, and man, was it full! :)
Peace :)

Elevator
Tuesday, July 20th 2010
On the ride up to my floor in the elevator, I surprised myself by wanting to greet the man who stepped on mid-way up. Now, usually I will smile or sometimes say hi to others riding in the elevator. But most of the time it's one of those awkward quiet moments, do you know what I'm talking about? When you know you only have a few seconds which is not enough time to start a conversation, but you're stuck in a small box with another person or people so you should say something.
Tonight, I had some extra confidence or energy that made me say, "Hi" to the man and then 15 seconds later as I got off on my floor, "Have a nice evening!"
It wasn't much, but it made me feel good. I don't like it when nothing is said and everyone ignores everyone else on that short, but oh-so-long and silent 20 second elevator rides. I think I'll try to start being more outgoing in the future. I'll let you know how it goes :)
Peace :)

Letter
Monday, July 19th 2010
Getting back into the groove of work on a Monday wasn't too bad and the day went quickly- which isn't always a good thing. It was fine today though. After cooking dinner for D (and myself), I settled in on the sofa for the evening, and wrote a letter to my Grandma B.
I wanted to say hi and tell her about a few things I've been up to lately, plus what we have planned for the next couple weeks. I also told her how much fun D and I had with the family at the 4th of July bbq and that we look forward to seeing her soon.
I mailed it out and hope she gets it before the weekend :)

Chex Mix
Sunday, July 18th 2010
On our way home today, we pulled off at one of the exits to do some shopping. There was a skinny man with his shirt off, holding a sign. There were 2 others walking by that stopped to talk to him right as we stopped at the red light next to him. I had just put a bag of chex mix in the back seat, so I knew we had something for him but for some reason I hesitated.
I was thinking, what are the other 2 talking to him about? Do we interrupt them and offer the snack? Do we have time or is the light going to turn green any second?
After looking at the other stoplight for the 3rd time to see how much time we had until our light turned green, I asked D if he wanted to hand the man our chex mix. D didn't hesitate at all and rolled his window down.
"Sir, would you like this?" D asked as he held the bag out of the window.
The man walked over and accepted it. He didn't say anything, but nodded a polite "thank you." He went back and threw the mix on the ground. I thought, hmmm I wonder if he wanted it? Then he sat down and started eating it right away.
We drove away, both smiling :)

Cup Game
Saturday, July 17th 2010
What a fun day this has been! Waking up to a cup of coffee on the deck overlooking the lake, boating, swimming, enjoying a picnic lunch on the boat, playing ping pong and then a bbq. So relaxing and a huge treat to be out of the city and close with nature.
After dinner, we began playing a very high intensity, fast paced game (there were 9 of us). The object of one of the games was to pass cup #2 to the person next to you at the same time cup # 1 reaches them, which makes them lose. I have a hard time making someone lose a game, so I preferred to pass the cup across the table to keep the game going whenever I had the chance.
This wasn't exactly favored by everyone else, but I couldn't help it. So, when D was about to lose if I gave him cup #2- I instead passed it on to someone else. Everyone thought the game was over and started cheering, but then a loud, disappointed "Ahhhh" came out of everyone's mouths. It was really funny to see everyone realize the game wasn't actually over and then try to hurry up and keep it going :)

The Middle Sister
Friday, July 16th 2010
This weekend we've been invited to the lake to stay with some friends at their cabin and I wanted to pick up a little gift for the hostess, but I wasn't sure what to get. I was on the wine aisle at the store when I spotted the perfect bottle! It was a brand called "The Middle Sister", which is what my friend, the hostess, happens to be.
I thought this is perfect and picked it up instantly, but then hesitated. Is this silly or dumb? I feared silently. I think it's really cute, but will she?
I put the bottle in my shopping basket and off to the checkout counter I went.
Peace :)

Haircut
Thursday, July 15th 2010
I was well passed due for a haircut & color, and since the girl who does my hair (Rachel)'s salon closes by 6, I can't make it in time after work. I didn't want to take a 2 hr lunch break (especially since it's difficult enough to take a 30 min break-we are so busy!) so, luckily Rachel offered for me to go over to her apartment to have it done after work.
I've been going to Rachel for almost 5 years now. Her prices have steadily increased over the years, but I guess that's expected. My tipping is considerably fair, I'd like to think. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. But tonight, since she took the time to have me over to her house and accommodated my schedule, I gave her a little more. It was payday afterall!
Peace :)

Dinner
Wednesday, July 14th 2010
I feel so energized! Earlier today I was scrounging around for some Skittles, about to grab some caffeine from the vending machine or anything to pep myself up. The reason I have so much energy now-at 9:30pm- I just got home from serving dinner down at the mission. Another wonderful night!
I had to park my car 7 blocks away, but I was glad to get the exercise. When I arrived, I noticed there were more helpers there than last time so that was a slight relief. Not that I mind working extra hard, but we try to serve so many so fast that it gets kind of stressful if we are shorthanded.
I wrapped plastic forks in napkins while my buddy Shawna had a little frosting fight with a guy named Stan. She came over to tell me she thinks he's cute and might ask him out. I said, "I figured you thought he was cute." :)
Then she and I started having a conversation about social intelligence which sort of caught me off guard, but I was interested. Then we were distracted and off to get ready to serve!
I was lucky to be on the veggies and rolls and we served about 75 people (half of what we had last time). Some people were friendly, some were not, some were talkative, and some said nothing. One man told us we are all beautiful and I told him that he is as well. The music was playing loudly in the kitchen and it was awesome.
After we were done serving all the cupcakes we had, cleaning up and putting things away, I said my goodbyes and hopes to see the other volunteers all again next time.
The 7 block walk was the best way to unwind for the day. It was 80 degrees, still very light out and a peaceful feeling overwhelmed me. One of the men who was there for dinner was sitting on the sidewalk. He smiled and nodded to me. I smiled while saying "Good evening" and headed home.
Peace :)

Order Line
Tuesday, July 13th 2010
Back at my favorite fast food Mexican restaurant for lunch, I found myself waiting in line behind a woman holding a baby girl. The baby was probably near 1 year old. I'm not an expert on guessing ages of children by any means, but this is my best guess.
The little girl was facing me from within her mother's arms as we moved closer and closer to the front of the order line. She kept staring at me and I kept on smiling and waiving to her which was making her start to laugh. A laughing baby is probably the cutest sight & sound in the world, do you agree?
I think she was intrigued by my thick-framed glasses. I don't usually tell strangers how cute or adorable their children are, but I felt comfortable enough to say "She's really cute" to the mother who was-by now- wondering what I was doing behind her to make her child stare and laugh so much. I think the mom was pretty happy.
Then I picked up a napkin off the sidewalk on my way out. This place is going to want me coming back everyday if I keep cleaning up their parking lot after I buy their tacos!
Peace :)

Orchid
Monday, July 12th 2010
My co-worker, Miss P, was out on vacation for the past 2 weeks and she celebrated her birthday on July 2nd. Since we always celebrate birthdays at the office, we would plan to have something for Miss P when she returned today.
The workload has picked up drastically over the past few weeks, so a potluck or party wasn't exactly feasible. Instead, I picked up a birthday card for everyone to sign and with a few donations, an orchid flower in a pot. It was a beautiful white flower and we had it sitting on her desk where she could see it as soon as she walked in.
We hope you had a fabulous vacation Miss P and we are also glad to have you back :)

Imax Theater
Sunday, July 11th 2010
D and I went to a museum to watch a movie called "The Deep Sea" on the Imax screen. It was so awesome! They gave us a short spiel on the rules before we entered, including- "please clean up after yourself and utilize the trash bins on your way out".
We went to sit down and saw there was a full popcorn tub and napkins in the seats where we were headed. "Is someone sitting here?" We asked eachother. Like we knew the answer! :) The popcorn tub was completely full so we sat down the row further in case someone was saving their seat.
On our way out I noticed there was no one in those seats and the garbage was still there. So I picked it up and threw it away. Thoughts come to mind like, people are paid to clean this up, this is keeping someone employed to leave this here...I'm not sure if that's exactly true or not. Do you know?

2x4
Saturday, July 10th 2010
This morning I ran through one of my favorite neighborhoods. I am trying to get in shape for an upcoming race next month, so I went a little farther than usual.
There was a steep hill I challenged myself to run all the way to and up without stopping and I made it! I got to the top of the hill and saw some construction going on. I figured this was a good time to stop running and walk for a bit, especially since the workers were blocking the sidewalk :)
The forklift was carrying a big stack of 2x4's across the street and one fell off as it turned around. I thought I might as well pick it up and move it near the other stack, rather than leave it out in the street. I wasn't sure if I was getting in their way, but hopefully it didn't hurt to pick it up for them.
Peace :)

Grocery Store Checkout
Friday, July 9th 2010
As I was checking out at the grocery store, buying things like sparkling wine, olives, cheese and peanut butter, I noticed they were accepting donations to support the Boys & Girls Club. They had a very smooth way of advertising it too. Instead of having the clerk ask you out loud "Would you like to donate a dollar today to support..." and then you feel guilty saying "no" in front of everyone in line behind you. Or you might not feel guilty, but you probably don't want to have someone ask you the same question everytime you go to the store, whether you donate or not.
So, the way this store does it is they have 3 laminated coupons next to the register. A $1, $5 and $10 card that you pick up and hand to the cashier, they swipe it and it adds that amount to the bill. No talking necessary. And no need to say "no" out loud if you don't want to give. I'm sure the cashier's don't mind not asking that question to each customer that comes in too.
So I only did the $1, but it was fun and maybe I'll pick up the $5 card next time.
Peace :)

Parking Garage
Thursday, July 8th 2010
I was on my way home and noticed the parking garage door to the building I live in was closed. They don't close it until 10pm in the winter, but lately they've been closing it around 8. Not sure why...
There was a car on their way out so I backed up to give them room. I waited for a minute out in the street thinking the door would rise any second. But it didn't. What is going on? I decided they must be stuck in there and the automatic door isn't opening.
So, I pulled as far off to the right as I could to give her room to get by once I opened the door. I used my key and opened it, then waited for the girl to drive out before I pulled in.
She didn't look my way at all, even though we were 2 feet apart. I was trying to get a wave or something out of her, but nope. Nothing. That's ok though. I wasn't doing it to get a thank you or anything, I was just surprised that she didn't even look my way. Oh well, if I was stuck in a garage I probably wouldn't be smiling either.
Peace :)

Napkins
Wednesday, July 7th 2010
I guess this makes it 2 days in a row that I picked up trash from a parking lot. I was walking out of my favorite fast food Mexican restaurant on my lunch break and there were paper napkins laid out on the sidewalk.
I quickly picked them up and went back inside to throw them away. This reminds me- I still have that black plastic sack on the backseat floor of my car! It's a black interior car, and I didn't even see it! I'll try to remember today :)
Peace :)

Plastic Sack
Tuesday, July 6th 2010
There was a black plastic sack blowing around the parking lot at work all afternoon. I saw it through the window once and didn't think much of it. Then, as I was walking to my car a few hours later, there it was again.
Hmmm, should I pick it up? It looks kind of dirty and I don't really want to touch it. I thought to myself.
A co-worker gave some advice, "Don't pick it up if it's dirty."
"Peer pressure!" I replied as I picked it up and put it in my car since there were no bins around. Off we went!

Gelato
Monday, July 5th 2010
I had the day off from work (holiday) and planned to meet my friend Krissy at an outdoor shopping center. We hadn't spent time together in months so I was really looking forward to this.
She and I dilly-dallied for a while and then we decided we should get a drink of water and maybe a treat too. We looked to the left and there was a gelato shop. How convenient! I decided early this morning that I wanted to treat her to a coffee or something just like this and with a little hesitation she eventually let me.
We took our ice cream to a table outside, watched the people go by, babies throw tantrums, and caught up on all the things we've been up to and all the things we have planned for the summer.
We had a great time and ended up spending 5 hours there! It was so nice to have no plans or places to hurry off to. Hopefully we can do this again one day soon.

Half Marathon
Sunday, July 4th 2010
It's 5am and the alarm is sounding! Did I mention it's Sunday morning on a holiday weekend? Yep, D and I are being swooped up by his friend to head out of town for a half-marathon race at 5:30am. I'm not running in it, but D and his buddy are. I'm just going as a spectator & supporter.
And I had so much fun! We were out in the country, there was a live band playing music, a barn full of fresh produce for purchase, a gift shop, and fresh strawberry shortcake. It's quite nice to be up so early on a summer morning, feeling the fresh warm air and listening to the chirping birds. I walked around the start/finish line where all of this activity was for 2 hours and never once felt bored. I meant to lay my blanket out and read a book, but I ran out of time just meandering around!
D sent me a message when he was at mile 11 (yes, he carried his phone with him- for musical purposes mainly) so I made my way to the finish line and waited. As I spotted him down the road, I had the camera ready and started cheering loudly. 2 hours, 9 seconds was his final time. Over 2 hours of running! Nice job D!

Morning Run
July 3rd, 2010
I decided to get up early and go for a jog through the downtown district. This time of day in the city is great, only a few people are about, the delivery trucks are stocking up the shops and restaurants, and the air is quiet as the sun is newly awake.
The first jogger I passed said good morning to me and I thought, it's so nice when people greet others as they meet on a path or sidewalk. I was taught at a young age that it is polite to say hello to others as we passed them on our family bikerides and it has sort of been forgotten now that I live in a bigger city. Ok, I'm going to try to say "hello" or "good morning" to each person I pass on this run.
Thirty seconds later, as my mind was wandering-thinking about all the "things" I need to do (or so I tell myself I need to do them) I realized I passed one or two others without saying a word! I forgot already!
By then I was running along the waterfront and saw a man sitting on a bench. It looked like he had perhaps slept on that very same bench last night.
I looked at him and said with a smile, "Good Morning".
He perked up with a sudden straight posture and said, "Good Morning Ma'am. Have a good day!" His tone got louder because I was running past him by this point.
I turned around with a giant smile and replied, "Thanks! You too, have a great day!" :)
I could almost hear him say hi to the next passer-by, like he had suddenly woken up to a bright sunny day by the river. I hope that he has fun today and is greeted by lots of others too.
Peace :)

Pastrami Sandwich
Friday, July 2nd 2010
As D and I were walking to dinner, we passed a man looking for money to buy a sandwich. I had a dollar ready in my pocket just in case this exact opportunity arose! ;)
"Yes, I have a dollar." I said and held it out for him.
But he nearly shook his head saying no. He wanted more than 1 dollar! Now, there are times when I will give more- even up to $20 depending on the circumstance and how bountiful I'm feeling. I'm not feeling this so much tonight.
"I want a pastrami sandwich from Fred Meyer and I need more than 1 dollar." He said as he took the money from my hand.
Now, I could have reached in my wallet and given him more, but there are times when I start to feel taken advantage of. It's not easy for me to say no, but tonight I did.
"Hopefully someone else on your way there will give you some more. Or, there's a McDonald's right there where you can buy a sandwich for less."
"No, no, no. I won't eat at McDonald's. No." He said and walked away.
"Ok, have a good evening." I replied as we walked in the opposite direction.
I'd like to think he ended up eating that pastrami sandwich.
Peace :)

Food Bank and a Rock
Thursday, July 1st 2010
They are having a food drive at the office to benefit the Oregon Food Bank and it was announced that if we bring in 5 cans of food, we can wear jeans today and tomorrow. This is something we all get excited about and I think about 98% of us brought food in today!
Then, on my lunch break I was driving through a store parking lot looking for a space to park. I got my hopes up when I saw one right away, but as I neared it, I noticed a fairly large rock right about where my tires would drive over. I didn't want to get a flat tire for a good parking spot (although sometimes I might risk that if I was really desperate) so I kept going until I found one nearby.
I almost walked past it, but I thought again- Why don't I pick up the rock so someone else can park here? Or so the next person who pulls in without seeing it won't damage their tires!
And there it went- in the garbage. Have you ever thrown a rock in the garbage? It just doesn't feel right. Oh well, no big deal!
Peace :)

Coffee Cake
Wednesday, June 30th 2010
One of my coworkers wasn't quite in tip-top shape earlier in the week and I wanted to do something to help (or try to help at least). So, I stopped by my favorite place to stop on my way to work (nothing unusual here) and I picked up a piece of coffee cake for Mr. J. I set it on his desk anonymously so he'd find it when he arrived.
"Thank you." He said right away, assuming it was from me.
"For what?" I asked, but couldn't prevent myself from laughing at the same time. "Of course."
It took him until about noon to finish it, but hopefully he enjoyed it- slowly :)
