Happy Birthday Grandpa

Sunday, December 26th 2010

Today is my grandpa's birthday and he's 84 years old this year. I called him up this morning to wish him a happy birthday and see what he had going on today.

He told me about the stormy weather they were having, what they did yesterday and what they had planned for tonight- dinner at Elmer's Pancake House. He talked more and longer than ever before and it was awesome!

Then I spoke with my grandma for a few minutes and learned a few more details about their weekend and we talked about how much fun we had on Christmas Eve. I told them I loved them and wished them a day of fun!

Peace :)

Merry Christmas

Saturday, December 25th 2010

Merry Christmas to all! Last night's festivities were grand and today we'll continue on celebrating.

I remember last year, I washed all the dishes at my mom's house from the Christmas Eve party so she could start getting ready for guests to arrive on Christmas Day. So, this year I wanted to do the same!

She puts so much work into hosting Christmas at their house, that that is the least I can do to help. I washed all the dishes (even a pan covered in bacon grease) and picked up the house a bit. We had breakfast, opened gifts, and relaxed in the family room all morning!

Then, D and I headed to his parents' house for dinner later this afternoon . I made a couple appetizers and we arrived just a few minutes late but that was ok. It was a fabulous day & night and I am so thankful for the family & friends we have in our lives.

I pray that those around near & far had a day filled with peace and love.

Peace :)

Gifts, Food & Wine

Friday, December 24th 2010

Today is my favorite day of the year- Christmas Eve! This year, the holiday season has flown by, but it's been wonderful all along the way. I pretty much have everything ready, except I needed to stop at the store for a few grocery items, some wine to take to the 3 parties we are going to this weekend and a few little extra gifts for others.

The excitement and preparation is fun, yet can be a little stressful, but I'm trying to relax and take it all in with a deep breath.

After making my way through the busiest store in town and through the heavy traffic on every block, I made it home. I was in a slight rush, but still took my time in wrapping the last of the gifts as pretty as possible, made an appetizer, packed up the car and headed out to D's grandma's house!

Peace :)

P:ear

Thursday, December 23rd 2010

Tonight I'm meeting my girlfriends for dinner and to celebrate Christmas- our 2nd annual gathering!

Last year, we exchanged gifts with each other, but this year we decided we'd each buy a gift for an organization called p:ear, who "builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives". Here is their website if you'd like to take a look:

http://pearmentor.blogspot.com/

They are asking for art supplies, school supplies, books, socks, and anything else that might help local youth in need. I was going to pick up a gift card to the bookstore, but ended up on the art/school supply aisle in the store instead. I was having so much fun filling up my basket with notepads, watercolor paints, glue, scissors, markers and lots of other fun stuff. It was great!

It reminded me of when I was younger and going back to school. Those things excite me a ton and it felt so good to know a young teen might really enjoy painting and drawing with the supplies I was picking out for them.

Peace :)

Daily Numbers

Wednesday, December 22nd 2010

We have a list at work that we report our progress on and our daily numbers are posted on the wall for everyone to see. It's not fun to have a "0" for the day because the goal is a minimum of 2 and everyone keeps an eye on the board constantly.

This morning I was having a system issue and with the help of my coworker, Mr. F, I got the file out in time. Since Mr. F stepped in to help out, I decided to give him the credit for the work- even though I spent about 3 hours on the file and he spent only 5 minutes, it made me feel more comfortable to give him the credit. I don't even think he noticed, but that was the fun part.

Plus, I had a few easy files luckily which balanced it all out anyway and it was my way of showing my appreciation for the help.

American Cancer Society

Tuesday, December 21st 2010

One of our external vendor reps at work comes in occasionally and drops off cupcakes and treats which are always delicious. But today, they sent each of us a Christmas card explaining the option to donate to a charity on their behalf.

You log on to a website which welcomes you personally and invites you to pick 1 out of 4 charities and the vendor will make a donation to that organization in your name. How awesome is that?!

I chose the American Cancer Society to make my donation to, in honor of my Aunt S. who is battling cancer. I don't know how much was donated, but the thought is wonderful and much more fulfilling than cupcakes and candy which are so commonly given for the holidays.

I love you Aunt S.

Pay The Full Price

Monday, December 20th 2010

After ordering a double shot of espresso mocha (my usual), the lady rang up the drink charging me for only 1 shot. Whereas, there have been times when I might have kept my mouth quiet (a long, long time ago I'm talking about ;), this time there was no hesitation at all.

"I don't think you charged me for the extra shot?" I politely added.

"Oh, yes. I'm sorry. Thank you so much for being honest." She replied.

Even though they are already charging a ton and keep raising their prices on us, I didn't mind a bit letting her know I owed more. I have cut back on going as often, so if I'm making the decision to spend my money there, I'd better be prepared to pay the full price without complaining.

Peace :)

Baby Plate

Sunday, December 19th 2010

I went out shopping today to find a gift for my new baby cousin who will be enjoying his first Christmas this year. I found the cutest baby plate (the kind with section dividers for each course). It's from one of my favorite kitchen supply stores and is covered with pictures of farm animals- something my family can relate to since most of them grew up living on a farm.

I think it will be useful and I hope his parents will like it too.

Peace :)

Christmas Party

Saturday, December 18th 2010

Tonight, we hosted a Christmas party at our house for our friends. D and I spent about 6 hours shopping, cleaning, cooking and preparing for our guests to arrive! It was a great day and we loved every minute of it. I'd say the best part is when the first couple arrived and it was time to start partying!

Everyone brought wine, appetizers and dessert and we served a proper 3 course dinner. It was the first time we've all sat down at the table as a big group and celebrated the holiday together in more of a formal fashion and it was fantastic. One friend even stood up and gave a toast!

I'm looking forward to the next time we have everyone over again.

Peace :)

Plastic Sack

Friday, December 17th 2010

Another piece of trash went flying past me tonight on our walk home- a plastic sack caught in the wind. It was almost a game to try and catch it on this blustery, cold night. D was laughing at me, but I grabbed it and threw it in the bin where there were lots of others bags overflowing and looking like they were ready to fly away at any moment.

Oh well. If they do, maybe I'll pick them up tomorrow when I walk by again.

Peace :)

Peace Card & Vase

Thursday, December 16th 2010

Well, I finally sent a card to my Auntie today which I meant to send since last week! I hope it's ok though and I hope she still likes it just the same.

I found a box of sweet greeting cards that have a picture of a white dove on the front (my favorite) and they're titled with the word "Peace". They are beautiful and my Auntie got the first one! I also bought her a pretty, little flower vase made out of porcelain which I'll give to her for Christmas.

Peace :)

Paper Cup

Wednesday, December 15th 2010

On my way to the train stop this morning, there was some garbage on the ground that I decided to pick up. It's been a while since I picked up trash and it's time I start doing it more often.

It wasn't much, just an empty paper cup, but it looks bad just lying there on the sidewalk so I threw it in the garbage, just 20 feet away!

Peace :)

S.M.A.R.T.

Tuesday, December 14th 2010

A few years ago I volunteered with the SMART program (Start Making A Reader Today) and absolutely loved it. I wanted to sign up and do it again for the past couple years, but never took the time- until a couple weeks ago. The coordinator contacted me and asked if I was available on Tuesdays to start reading and replied with a "Yes!"

So today was my first day, where I had a little introduction from the coordinator for the first 1/2 hour, then read with a 1st grader for the 2nd 1/2 hour. Next time I'll sit with 2 different students, each for a 1/2 hour.

The boy, Mr. J, was adorable and read an Arthur book to me the entire 30 minutes. He wanted help with the big words but he did a fantastic job with all the rest. I think he even learned a couple words. One of them was the word "school" because at the start he didn't know it and by the end, he was reading the word without hesitation. Wonderful!

It was also take-home-a-book day so each child got to pick out a paperback book to keep.

Mr. J picked out a different Arthur book to take home and while I walked him back to class, he started reading the book outloud all the way down the hallway. So cute! I'll go back after the holidays in a couple weeks and I'm looking foward to it very much!

Peace :)

D's Birthday

Monday, December 13th 2010

Happy birthday D and your twin brother Mr C! Tonight I rushed home to meet D and head down to his favorite sports bar for dinner and to watch Monday Night Football. This wouldn't be my first choice of activities to do on a Monday night, but it's his birthday and I'll do whatever he wants- except skydiving or anything like that of course.

I'm getting excited that I'm almost done with my Christmas shopping too. Today I bought a gift for the person who's name I drew in D's family's exchange so I think I only have 2 more people to buy for and then I'm ready!

This is my favorite time of year no doubt.

Peace :)

Guitar

Sunday, December 12th 2010

Today is my great Auntie's birthday and I meant to send her a card earlier last week so she'd get it in time, but here we are on the 12th already and I haven't sent one. I will still try to send one as soon as I can. Happy Birthday Auntie!

We have another birthday coming right up tomorrow too- D's! I had a present for him hiding at my parent's house for about a month and I've been so anxious to give it to him. My mom & dad brought it up yesterday, so tonight I asked if he wanted to open it.

He was surprised and looked so perplexed at how big the box was. When he realized it was a guitar, he turned into excited. It was fun watching him open it and start playing it. We'll see if he turns into a pro someday...

Peace :)

Birthday Celebration

Saturday, December 11th 2010

Today, my parents and brother came up to celebrate D's birthday, (which is coming up on Monday) my birthday which just passed and for a chance for my brother to meet D's parents. I prepared the appetizer, salad and baked D's favorite cake in the morning. Then D brought home the pizza which we baked for dinner after everyone arrived.

It was a rainy & stormy day, but we were so grateful to be warm & cozy inside with Christmas music playing, candles lit, wine flowing and dinner in the oven.

I am so thankful for this evening and I hope that everyone else enjoyed it even more than I did.

Peace :)

$5 Grocery Bag

Friday, December 10th 2010

On my way home from work, I stopped at my favorite grocery store where they are selling $5 and $10 bags of groceries for those in need. I love adding those to the tab at the register and tonight I picked the $5 bag.

It's so simple and easy. I'm not sure how they spend the money exactly. If it's actual food that is donated or money to the Food Bank maybe? I should ask and next time, after payday, I might go for the $10 bag.

Peace :)

Coffee Run

Thursday, December 9th 2010

Some of us signed up for tonight's work party where we are staying until 9pm or so to help another department get caught up on their workload. I was thinking this afternoon that a coffee run might be a good idea to get us going after the afternoon winds down.

I sent out an email to those staying to see if they wanted me to pick up a coffee for them in order to get ready and excited for the evening. Excited for a work party? It's worth a shot. A few accepted and 2 of us drove to pick them up. I think the caffeine helped pump us up for another 4 hours, plus it was a nice treat for such a long day.

Peace :)

Friends Over Before Thai Dinner

Wednesday, December 8th 2010

My dear friend Miss K wanted to take me out for dinner this week to a place of my choice, so I chose to go to the Thai restaurant downstairs from my apartment. I decided it would be appropriate to have her over for a glass of wine beforehand and invite her boyfriend too. So they both came over around the same time D got home and the 4 of us couldn't find enough time to get in all that we wanted to talk about!

Suddenly it was getting late and we still hadn't left for dinner! This has happened before and we never ended up making it to the restaurant in time because they close relatively early. But I wasn't going to let that happen again. Thai food here we come!

We had a delicious dinner and the guys had fun experimenting with the spice rack they brought to the table full of hot peppers & sauces. I kept mine on the mild side, Miss K's was perfect the way it was and the boys added lots of spice to theirs.

Thanks a lot Miss K & Mr. J for coming over tonight and for taking us out to dinner. Let's do this more often!

Peace :)

Home Is Where the Heart Is

Tuesday, December 7th 2010

Today I turned 30 years old! Quite an interesting feeling I've got to say. I don't mind getting older and I am really trying to embrace each year as they come and go, knowing that each brings more knowledge, lessons, and love. On love, it feels like my love is growing deeper in all of my relationships as I age- with my fiance, family, friends, and even strangers too. It is wonderful.

I felt like I was smiling a giant smile inside all day long at work. Even though I was at work, I felt as if there was no other place I wanted to be more. Of course, spending the day on a tropical island with all of my family would probably be more amazing then concentrating on files at the office, but what a great feeling to not even be thinking of what could be better than where you currently are. Those "daydream" thoughts didn't have time to cross my mind because I was fully content right in the moment.

The saying, "The grass is always greener" is sad but true a great deal of the time. When I'm at work, I think about how fun it would be to be at home. When I'm at home, I think about where I'd love to travel. When I'm traveling, I think about what I'm missing at home...

I wonder how I can keep that feeling I felt today and be so content no matter where I am or what I'm doing. If home is where the heart is, and our hearts are inside us, then why aren't we always at "home"?

I will also say that the time went by so fast today I don't even remember looking at the clock until 3:30 and expected it to say 11am! The same went with the romantic & festive evening I spent with D. So when time is flying, that usually means you are living in the moment, is that correct?

But then I think, why is life best spent with time flying? When you are doing what you love, it would be nice for time to slow down a bit so you can enjoy it even longer, right? Hmmm...

Well, with time going so fast I only did one little thing today for Miss J. She didn't realize that she'd have to work late tonight until we were told at our meeting, so she didn't come prepared with dinner- only a sack lunch. So when I went to pick up a sandwich, I offered to pick one up for her too :)

Thanks to all of my family and friends, near and far, who made this day special and for making every day special. I love you.

Peace :)

Card to Grandma B

Monday, December 6th 2010

I have been planning to send a letter to my Grandma B for quite some time now and today I finally did. I wanted to after D and I got engaged to tell her all about it and just to say hi at the same time. But time has gone by so quickly lately and she has now sent me 2 notes since!

I wrote in one of my favorite cards that I've been keeping for years and told her how much I love her (along with all the other day to day stuff of course!). I bought her a Christmas gift yesterday, but I didn't tell her that. I'll keep that a surprise until I see her at Christmas.

I think it's time to buy another box of blank cards to have on hand for occasions like this.

Peace :)

Train Ticket

Sunday, December 5th 2010

D and I were walking downtown this morning trying to catch the train at the right time to get a ride home. We ran up to one just as the doors were closing! So, we then started hurrying toward the next stop one block up where we could easily get on in time.

But then a lady stopped us at the ticket machine. I didn't know if she was going to ask us for money or directions or what, but we were then going to miss the train we were about to run for. You know what though, it didn't matter. When someone is waiving me down for help, it's like the rest of the world stops.

She didn't speak much English but I could make out that she wanted a one way ticket west through all zones. So I helped push the buttons for the right ticket and showed her the machine only takes credit cards, no cash. I was slightly surprised at how much she trusted me to even let me pay with her credit card for her! Who does that these days? I felt like I was in a old-fashioned, peaceful world where everyone is honest and the town is bustling with Christmas shoppers all around. Doesn't get much better than that.

She got her ticket in time for her train and we ran to the next and made it home within a few minutes. What a nice sunny Sunday in December.

Peace :)

Girl's Party

Saturday, December 4th 2010

Since the wedding ceremony is only 2 blocks from my house, I invited all the girls over to my house to get ready together, have lunch and mimosas before we went to the wedding. Most of our significant others are in the wedding, so this way we have each other to go over with. Plus, it's always a fun time when the girls get together.

I woke up as early as I could and started cleaning the house, then prepared some food and got myself ready almost in time for them to arrive. I was running late, but luckily so was everyone else which gave me a much needed extra half hour.

We had so much fun and the time went by so fast! Then we were off to the fabulous wedding ceremony and reception that lasted from 2:30-12 midnight! It was a wonderful celebration and everything was so beautiful. Congratulations Mr and Mrs. S and thanks for letting us share in this joyous day with you.

Peace :)

Wrapping Paper

Friday, December 3rd 2010

I love buying gifts and presents for people for any and all occasions. But when it comes to wrapping the gifts, I don't get too excited. I'm not so good at it and I'd rather put them in a cute gift bag with colorful tissue paper than try to wrap a box with paper. Either I get too much paper and have to fold it over and over. Or, I don't get enough and then have to cut a spare square and tape it on, then cover it all up with bows hoping no one notices. Maybe the more I do it, the better I'll get at it?

So I bought a roll of pretty wedding paper and a card to go with it for our dear friends' wedding this weekend and I'm going to wrap it as best as I can!

Peace :)

Most Positive Players

Thursday, December 2nd 2010

Today our manager sent us an email asking everyone to vote for the 2 people we think have been the Most Positive Players in the month of November and to write a sentence as to why we voted for them.

I had some ideas, but then took an hour or so to think about it before making a decision. I chose 2 people who I felt have been working extra hard and staying in a good mood regardless of what's happening around them.

I'm excited to find out the results and to see their expressions when the compliments are read aloud.

Peace :)

BOGO

Wednesday, December 1st 2010

I received a buy-one-get-one free (bogo, as some call them) coupon in the mail to my favorite mexican restaurant- Chipotle! Last time I had one of these, I asked my coworker if she wanted to share it with me and I thought it would be fun to do the same thing again.

Miss J seemed excited and we both looked forward to going today. When it came time to pay, things got a little confusing because I was also picking up lunch for another co-worker and then trying to use the coupon with Miss J at the same time.

Not to worry though. It all worked out with a little simple math and trading of cash once we got back to the office. And, it sure was worth it!

Peace :)

4 Quarters

Tuesday, November 30th 2010

On our way home from dinner tonight, it was nearly 9pm and, once again, my gas tank was about empty. It would be nice to skip it and wait until tomorrow morning, but since we were driving right by a gas station, I asked D if we could stop (he was driving).

The lady was really nice and I wanted to tip her, but I didn't have any cash! I thought, is it ok to give coins or is that kind of cheap? Oh well, I'm going to do it anyway.

So I dug up 4 quarters and carefully handed them to her so none dropped. Maybe she'll use them for a cup of coffee or a candy bar in the attached mini mart!

Peace :)

Dinner for 6

Monday, November 29th 2010

I think I now receive at least one piece of mail from charity organizations, sometimes up to 5, per "time I pick up the mail." Not per day, because we only check the mailbox about twice a week. So what's that? About 2-10 letters per week!

It's hard to say no, but sometimes I have to. Otherwise, I'll have to start working part time so I can stay home and fill out forms/write checks everyday. And then I'd be in debt with no money left to give!

Today, one struck my attention though. It was for the Union Gospel Mission where I serve dinners occasionally. This reminds me that they haven't called me in a while. Maybe I should check in and see if they need some extra help...

Anyway, I sent a check to them for $11 which the note says will buy a meal for 6 people! Perhaps, I will get to serve the meal too!

Peace :)

Red Kettle

Sunday, November 28th 2010

It's that time of year when The Salvation Army has their bells ringing! I remember volunteering in high school once outside the shopping mall with a friend. It was so cold, but we stood there for what seemed like a whole day! I'm sure it was only 3 hours or so, but it felt like a long time.

Tonight I put a dollar in the red kettle on my way out of the store and the man thanked me so kindly. The people always seem to be so appreciative. It makes it really fun to drop even a few small coins in! I hope I was that nice to others when I did it back in high school...

Well this will be a fun month with lots of caring opportunities all around for the holidays!

Peace :)
