It's been a long time since I wrote to my friend 'Sarah' in England. She was a good friend of mine, whom I met while living in Australia over 5 years ago. She and I have kept in touch by email over the years, usually not letting more than 4 or 5 months go by in between correspondence (which is too long I know, but time flies!).
So, I wrote her an email telling her all the latest happenings here in the life of an American-almost-thirty-something girl. I wasn't even going to get my hopes up for a quick reply, but she sent me a message right away to tell me how glad she was to get an email and she'll respond with a long reply soon. It made me smile just to know she read my mail :)

Phone Call

I've been missing my family lately. I haven't seen or talked to my grandparents in over a month now! Life has become so busy lately that I find myself missing out on the things that matter most. This probably means it's time to make some adjustments to my schedule so I can spend more time with those most important to me.
So I called my grandma and grandpa this afternoon and had a nice visit with both of them. I was surprised to catch them at home because they are ususally out and about running errands, going for drives in the countryside, cheering my cousin on at his baseball games, and all that sort of stuff.
It was so lovely to hear their voices and I think I'll see what I can do about going to visit them next weekend. It's only a little over an hour drive to their house, but I like to make a whole day out of it, so let's see if we can plan it!

Kitchen Utensils

Tonight we attended a wedding for a friend of D's. It was a fabulous mostly-outdoor celebration with a view of the river, pink flowers everywhere, along with joyous love and laughter all around. Everyone looked stunning in their dresses, suits and tuxedos. We ate, drank, chatted with old college friends, and danced the night away.
We gave the bride and groom a not-so-creative kitchen utensil gift which was listed on their registry. It's ok though, because that's what they wanted! Congratulations to them and thanks for allowing us to share your special day with you.

Pizza & Wine
Friday, June 25th 2010
Tonight we had D's father and his father's girlfriend over for pizza. It was their first time visiting us at our house, so I wanted to be sure the place looked nice and we had everything they'd want to eat & drink. I found out his dad likes diet cola, so I picked up both diet Coke and diet Pepsi just in case. People seem to like one or the other, right? And his girlfriend likes Chardonnay, so I bought 2 bottles- 1 nice, and 1 on the cheaper side for myself.
We had appetizers set out when they arrived and before I knew it, D was pouring the cheap wine for everyone! It wasn't a big deal, but next time around I made sure to give her the good stuff :)
We had a great time visiting and sharing common interests. The pizza was great and the laughter plentiful. We hope to have them over again soon.

Donuts
Thursday, June 24th 2010
It was one of the manager's birthday today and we had plans to bring in lunch, but I thought it would be fun to have a little sweet treat too. So I stopped by my new favorite donut shop (which happens to be located 1 block from my house, how convenient :) on the way to work and picked up a pink box full of donut holes.
I think everyone liked them (I know I did) because they were gone by the afternoon. That may seem late, but if you saw the cookies still sitting there after a couple weeks (which happens all the time), you'd understand that the donuts went fast. It's fun when $4 is enough to treat a big group of wonderful coworkers.

Train Tickets & Cotton Candy
Wednesday, June 22nd 2010
I won tickets today to a baseball game! And the ballpark happens to be across the street from my house too, how convenient is that? Along with the 2 tickets came 2 train tickets which I wouldn't need since, like I said, I live right across the street.
So, I walked over to the train stop to try to give the passes away. I asked 4 different people if they needed train tickets, but everyone shook their head and said "no" like I was almost bothering them.
I can put them on top of the ticket machine. No, they'll blow away and end up face down on the street somewhere. I can set them inside the dispenser, but what if no one sees them? I wish I had some tape to post them up on the machine.
All these thoughts went through my head. Then I realized D was standing nearby waiting to enter the stadium- whoops! I better get going. So, I set them in the machine and could only hope someone found them before buying tickets.
Our friend J was at the game too and the 3 of us sat together eating snacks all night that his friend gave him. The game was a blast and on our way out we gave a young kid our leftover cotton candy (he had a big smile on his face :)). It's fun to keep passing things around, one person giving to another and another!
Peace :)

Mailbox
Tuesday, June 22nd 2010
I rented a movie at Blockbuster on my way home from work at 8pm. The gentleman at the movie store was so nice to help me find the movie I was looking for and to give a little further information on it. I thought it would be nice to tip him for his extra-helpful service.
"Do you accept tips?" I asked when he was done ringing me up.
"Unfortunately, I can't." He said with a very disappointed look on his face. "Somehow I always seem to land the jobs that don't get tips." He added.
"Ok, I'm sorry. I hope you have a great evening." I said as I walked out.
So, then I was leaving and thought- what can I do now? Right then I saw a mailbox outside (the kind that have a bunch of cubby holes) in the parking lot. Ding ding! A bell went off in my head.
I slipped a dollar bill in the "outgoing mail" box and drove away.

Doggie Treats
Monday, June 21st 2010
We've been dogsitting a sweet, black labrador that is D's Uncle's dog for a couple days now. I decided I don't always need to do something for a human, I can do something for an animal too!
Actually, I should give some credit here to D. It was mostly his idea. I bought a pack of doggie treats at the store and gave her one. I'm not sure how much she liked it; I think they were kind of stale. Oh well, it was fun to give her extra attention anyway!

Lady
Sunday, June 20th 2010
Well, the dollar bill I left on the slot machine last night must have paid off because I ended up winning about $30 today (which is a lot for me, I'm not exactly what you'd call a "high roller").
We were all excited about having just had a really fun weekend together, but all not afraid to admit that we were ready to go home.
D picked us up at the airport and we dropped 2 other girls off at their homes. Then, he and I were walking from the car to our house when the same lady that I gave a banana muffin to a couple weeks ago stopped us.
"Do you have some money?" She yelled as she crossed the street toward us. I was almost surprised at how loud she yelled. I didn't feel like stopping at first, but then I remembered the winnings I had in my pocket. So, I gave her some change and she thanked us sincerely.
I think I'll be seeing her around often, so maybe next time I'll get the nerve up to talk to her and hear some of her story. Maybe I'll even tell her she's in my story!
Peace :)

Slot Machine & Bed
Saturday, June 19th 2010
It has been a fun couple of days on vacation! The sun is out, the food is good (and complimentary at the hotel-I'd like to come back here very soon!), the people are friendly, and I even won a few bucks on the penny slots! I left a dollar on one of the slot machines for someone else to try their luck- hopefully it worked :)
After a long day and a lot of sun, (did I mention my skin is bright red and my ankles are burned?) I started to feel like it was time for bed. So, one of the other girls and I headed back to the room where I couldn't have been more excited for my bed on the sofa. (2 of us volunteered to take the sofa, one on each arm of the "L"-shape). It was surprisingly one of the most comfy sofas I've ever slept on.
Anyway, after I made my bed I thought it would be nice to get the blanket and pillow set up for the other girl who would be coming back later. So I made her bed on the other arm of the "L" and fell right to sleep. I vaguely remember her saying how nice it was that her bed was already made when she got in, then she talked about it the next day too. So I think she liked it and I didn't really even know it was a big deal!

Trading Plane Seats
Friday, June 18th 2010
I have the day off and I'm flying to Vegas!!! A few months ago 5 other girls and I decided to take a girl's trip to Vegas and the time has come! I am so excited to have the day off and to be heading to the 90+ degree weather. We are going to lay out by the pool and relax as soon as we get there.
As we were waiting on the plane at the Santa Rosa airport (layover), 2 older women boarded and one sat next to me, the other behind me. The woman (who was about 50 yrs old) told her mom, "Maybe someone will be nice enough to switch seats with one of us so we can sit together mom." It wasn't too difficult to pick up on the hint she was giving, let me tell you.
Her mom was probably close to 75 yrs old, but even if she wasn't old or they weren't related, I still wouldn't have a problem switching seats so they could be together. No big deal at all.
"Would you like to trade seats with me so you can sit together?" I asked. "Oh, that would be so kind of you! Do you mind?"
"Of course not." I answered as I got up to switch seats. And, it was actually quite amusing to listen to them talk throughout the ride. The mom was hilarious and the daughter gave us a few "Vegas Tips" for our trip to get us started off on the right track :)

Baseball Cards
Thursday, June 17th 2010
I didn't have much time on my lunch break, but I really needed to get my Father's Day package sent off to my dad (one of my 2 dads, let's call this one Daddy "D" and the other Daddy "R"). I already sent Daddy R's earlier in the week since it was going to Colorado which takes a few extra days.
I was relieved when the lady at the UPS store said it would definitely get there by Saturday. So, off went the Yankee baseball cards and Father's Day card. I hope he likes it!

Hat Box
Wednesday, June 16th 2010
Once again, it was late in the evening when D and I were walking around the neighborhood. As we were busily eating ice cream cones and laughing, a man in a wheelchair approached us asking for money.
It seems that if I haven't found an opportunity during the day, no matter how late it is, if I just step outside my house, there will be someone or something that presents itself and allows me to do or give something in a matter of seconds.
I had a dollar in my pocket and quickly pulled it out for him. He thanked me and then tried to give me a giant hat box-like mini suitcase with a handle. He said, "Here, this is for you."
I said, "Oh, that's ok thank you, but we don't have any room in our tiny apartment for it."
He insisted again, "It's for you. Someone told me to give it to you."
"Ok, thank you." Was all I could think to say as I accepted the box. Off we went carrying it down the street!
Peace :)

Musician at the Park
Tuesday, June 15th 2010
It was late in the evening when D and I walked down to the mini market attached to our building on the street level. There was a baseball game going on at the ballpark across the street and a man playing an instrument while singing stood outside the park gates.
So I walked over and put some change in his bucket and smiled at him as he said "Thank you ma'am," over the microphone.
I get a little embarrassed around microphones so I was quick to get back to the other side of the street and off to buy some treats!
Peace :)

Werther's Original
Monday, June 14th 2010
Tonight was the best experience volunteering I've ever had! I went to the Union Gospel Mission to serve dinner at 7. We were short-handed, so there was lots to be done! Slice cakes, assemble the dessert trays, slice and toast garlic bread, wrap forks in napkins, organize the milk cartons and get ready to serve.
I get such a rush when we're done setting up and about to lift the sliding door. My new friend Sarah, who volunteers their very often, likes to take charge and she knows what she's doing (I thanked her a few times for guiding me throughout the night and ordering me around- seriously). She had her hand on the curtain switch and asked us (the only 2 others there), "Are we ready?!"
And then the curtain is lifted and there are about 150 people eagerly waiting in line for a delicious, hot dinner. We start dishing up the trays with as much speed, love and care as possible.
"Would you like biscuits and gravy? Would you like some garlic bread?" I asked over 150 times. The people were in such a good mood last night, they were asking me how I was doing and most of them were "doing good" too.
One fellow walked up to the counter when all were almost done. He approached slowly with a smile. I wasn't sure what he wanted and I had my tongs ready to hand him some bread. He didn't say a word, but held out his hand like he had a surprise to drop into my hand (my favorite game as a child by the way). I felt slightly nervous for what he was about to give me, but I held out my open hands. Are you ready for this? 2 Werther's Original coffee flavored candies fell into my hand! I felt so delighted inside, I don't know how to describe it. He said, "I think they could use a little more cream and sugar." I smiled a smile bigger than my face could hold and thanked him with all of my heart.
Then we packed up french toast with syrup for those who wanted to take something with them and began cleaning. It was then 9:30 and the room still needed mopping. So, with a hand full of slivers from the mop handle, I was finished and ready to go home at nearly 10pm.
Usually I'm falling asleep on the sofa by 9:30, but tonight I had so much energy I could have stayed up for hours! I'm looking forward to going back to the UGM soon :)

Baby Shower
Sunday, June 13th 2010
Happy birthday Mom and Cousin A! :)
I called to wish my cousin "A" a happy birthday this morning. I would have called my mom too, but she was on her way over any minute anyway so I thought I'd wait until then to tell her in person.
Then we went to another cousin's baby shower in a town 40 minutes away. We wrapped a cute little gift of baby clothes and took it to the party along with an appetizer too. They requested we bring scrapbooking materials, but we don't even know where we could find those so hopefully the gift and food was sufficient. I think it was.
It was nice to see family we hadn't seen in a while and meet some new people. She received many nice gifts and is excited about the baby boy who is expected to arrive in August. Congratulations Cousin C!

Graduation & Birthday
Saturday, June 12th 2010
You know the high school student intern we threw a party for the other day? Well, today was his graduation ceremony at a local university. He invited all of us at work to attend and without hesitation, I gladly committed to going.
It was a wonderful ceremony full of humorous speeches, music, a video slideshow, and celebration of each student's success. Two teachers even stood up and described something that is unique and special about each and every senior graduate. Some were funny, some were just flat out sincere and kind. I had to wipe away a few tears throughout the 2 hours, but it was amazing.
Then, it was time to hurry home and get ready for my mom's birthday dinner. I went to two grocery stores, got the house ready and started preparing the meal. We had D's parents along with my parents (6 of us in total) over. It was a very fun evening! We ate, drank and laughed until it was time for bed. I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did.
Peace :)

Peace :)
Birthday Gift
Friday, June 11th 2010
This weekend is my mom's birthday, so I went shopping today to find her a gift. I usually pick out a few little treats and wrap them together, rather than one bigger item. Not surprisingly, that's what happened again this year too!
I found a pretty yellow & pink nightshirt that's perfect for summertime. Then a pair of earrings, matching necklace and a box of Sugar Babies (candy). Hopefully she'll like it!

Cookie Dough
Thursday, June 10 2010
I received an email from a friend who is helping sell cookie dough for a high school girl asking if I'd like to support her cheerleading fundraiser. This is the 2nd high school cheerleading fundraiser I've come across in the last couple weeks. I thought and thought about it for 2 days.
$15 is a lot of money to give twice to the same cause. Or, maybe I should save it for another organization? Or, I could buy the cookie dough, bake the cookies and hand them out around town to help 2 groups at the same time!
So, I ordered 45 balls of chocolate chunk cookies and I'm now looking forward to their arrival! :)

Going Away Party
Wednesday, June 9th 2010
We've had a high school student intern at our office for 9 months now and today was his last day. We decided we should throw him a Graduation from High School/Going Away/Last Day of Work Party! I sent out an invitation to the department a few weeks ago with a list of items for people to sign up and bring.
Yesterday there was a debate on where we should order lunch, so today we had a vote. It turned out to be slightly stressful (I made it that way on myself, I don't know why I do that). Anyway, I had help from others in decorating, ordering lunch, providing all kinds of treats, etc. Thanks to them!
Then, I picked up the pizza, set up the tables & food with the help of my coworker Miss P and made sure we had everything we needed. Everyone gathered around for a group photo and then I was ordered to give a speech!!! Yikes! I did it though (it was more of a 3 sentence appreciation toast with no champagne). So that was ok.
I think the intern appreciated it, just as we appreciated his hard work this year.

Muffin

I was walking to my car and came upon a lady I've seen frequently around town. She asked me if I had any money so she could get something to eat. My instant reaction (as I was grumpy and in a hurry) was, "No, I'm sorry not today." I thought I've given her money and food before and I'm going to run out of money soon myself if I keep giving it to the same person!
Then guilt spread all over my brain and body. Why would I say no? I'm still not sure, but anyway- I remembered I had just packed a homemade banana muffin in my bag for breakfast, so I stopped, turned around and called out (almost in a yell, she was quite a distance away by now) "Ma'am". She didn't hesitate as she turned around and looked at me in anticipation.
I walked quickly toward her and she met me halfway. I said, "I have a banana muffin here if you'd like that to eat?"
"A what?" She asked.
"A banana muffin. I made it and it's really good (if I do say so myself :))". I answered.
"Ok, sure. Thank you."
And off to work I went. Luckily I had some goldfish crackers in my desk that I could have for breakfast later :)
Peace :)

Gas Station Girl
Monday, June 7th 2010
I wasn't in a very good mood this morning on my way to work. I usually arrive to work at least 30 minutes early so there is no stress on being late. But today, there were a few things I needed to take care of which led me to leave home at a time that would put me at my desk right on time.
However, the on-ramp to get on the highway was closed, so I had to turn around and go a different route. This led me to 17 red lights in a row. Yes, I counted each one of them. On top of that, I had to go up a 2 mile hill on an empty gas tank with warning lights flashing at me in the dashboard. I didn't think I would make it to the gas station but I did.
I wasn't in the mood to tip anyone, but the young girl (not more than 16 years old) started washing my window so I changed my mind. Washing the windshield definitely deserves a tip. But then she started to almost hit the window with the squeegee! I couldn't believe it. She was leaving trails of water all over the windshield and hitting the glass along with it! Hmmm, maybe I won't tip her, I thought.
For some reason, I decided maybe she was just having a bad morning too. Maybe a tip is all it will take. So, as she handed me the receipt, I gave her a dollar. She got excited and thanked me. I saw her almost skip over to the next car she was tending to. Hopefully she washed their window a little more gently :)
Peace :)

Graduation Party
Sunday, June 6th 2010
Today we were invited to D's cousin's graduation party which had a "No Gifts Please" on the invitation. Does it really mean No Gifts? I think that a high school graduate, about to go to college could use a few gifts, and by "gifts" I mean money!
So, we decided to put a little cash in a card and give it to him when we arrived. It wasn't a giant package wrapped with a bow on top- that would be too much of an attention getter. Just a simple card with some money. Hopefully he likes it :)

Golf Bag
Saturday, June 5th 2010
I was tidying up the house for a couple guests I had coming to visit- my mom and her long-time best friend (who is just like an aunt to me ) "C", when I heard D on the phone to a buddy, "Well, I haven't asked her yet, but I'm sure she won't mind." I knew exactly what he was talking about- letting his friend use my golf clubs and brand new golf bag!
Ugh, I thought to myself at first. The bag is mostly white in color, the ground is muddy, and last time he let a friend borrow my clubs, they came back covered in dirt and grass. Do I really want that to happen again? No!
But, as I thought it through with more patience, I decided "Yes, he can borrow them". The clubs have been loaned to me and the bag was a gift- so who am I to not share the same with others? I should let my worries go and accept the fact that it's going to get dirty soon anyway.
My mom, Auntie C, and I had a marvelous time together visiting, strolling through the shops, and having lunch. Everone was so excited the sun was out and summertime is here!

Car Door
Friday, June 4th 2010
It's Friday! D and I have taken after my parents' habit of having 'hors d'oeuvres' for dinner on Friday nights. It's nice to stay in and relax following a long week of work, also to prepare for the busy-ness Saturdays seem to bring week after week. (Saturday is my favorite day of the week by the way, although Sundays are coming in at a close 2nd lately).
But since the weather has been quite dreary lately and the sun popped out for a couple hours in the evening, we decided to go for a walk. We gave a dollar to some folks here and there. Then D came up with a great idea- he put a dollar bill under a car door handle, so when the person goes to open their door, they'll find it! And off we went.

Badge
Thursday, June 3rd 2010
I had just arrived at work in the morning when our new employee (former temporary employee) was telling me she could go pick up her access badge finally! We were both very excited for her because (as I described earlier) being a temporary employee isn't the most delightful position there is- one of the main reasons is that you have to call each morning to have someone let you in.
She told me where she was supposed to go to pick up the badge in the other building, but I could sense hesitation in her voice. I felt like it might be nice to walk over there with her (although I wasn't 100% sure, I had a good idea of where we were going). So, off we went and there was the lady with the badge!
We walked back to our area laughing and talking all the way. We are excited to have her working with us as a full time employee now. Congratulations J!

Coins & Parallel Parking
Wednesday, June 2nd 2010
It's already June 2nd! My, how the time is flying...Today was another busy day at the office, but nonetheless, I was buying a bag of chips out of the snack machine and just as I went to grab my change from the dispenser, I decided to leave it there for the next person.
I thought, is the person who finds it going to think- uh oh, someone forgot their change, I can't just pick it up because they might come back for it? Or, what an idiot to leave their change! I wondered, should I write a note that says it's for you and to have a nice day so the purpose is clear? Instead, I left it there and walked off.
During the evening, the sun was out for the first time all day and I decided it would be nice to go for a run. On the way back, there was a lady trying to parallel park her car. She was doing a fine job, but I felt like she needed someone to tell her she had backed up far enough and to stop before she hit the car behind her! (It appeared she was about to) As I neared her car, I gave a thumbs-up and nodded my head with a smile to say "You are good. Stop there." And she stopped.
Parallel parking isn't the easiest thing to do and it's nice when there's someone with you who can jump out and motion you to go forward or back more, do you agree?
Peace :)

Tulips
Tuesday, June 1st 2010
The weather has been very wet and dreary lately, but I don't seem to mind. There was a time when I longed to live where it's sunny year-round. Not anymore. I enjoy right where I am and the weather doesn't affect me like it used to- other than the fact that I don't like riding the train in the rain where I have to walk 1/2 mile. Who wants to show up to work soaking wet?
Well anyway, last night D and I went to his parents house for dinner. I always like to take a little hostess gift, this time it was the prettiest red & yellow tulips! His mom really liked them and put them in a vase on the table right away. I hope they last so she gets to enjoy them all week :)
Peace :)
